A Soldier's Life

by Aaron Deevers   Aug 10, 2007

Joined to gain respect
Respect from my friends and family
Joining not knowing that I would be leaving
Leaving to go over to another country
Another Country to fight
Fight a war that was not of my doing
Being placed in the line of fire
The line of fire I did not join up for

I know I am here to help
Yet I am afraid to step outside
Bombs blowing up
Bullets flying by me non-stop
I am here to stop this war
Here to protect the innocent
Yet I am protecting my new friends
Friends that come and go
Not knowing if they will return
I am scared that I might not return

A family and friends I wanted to gain respect
Waiting at home praying for my safety
I want to see them again
Respect I have gained
Gained from other soldiers
Gained from other countrymen
I feel that I made a mistake
A mistake of joining to earn something not needed

I look up to the sky each night praying
Praying for my safety and others safety
Hoping that once I close my eyes they will reopen
I prayer that each step I take wont be my last

Been here for four weeks
Seems such a long time
Seen so much that I wish I had not
Only another year
Another year of this pain
This pain of knowing I might not return
