Niam

by Dai   Aug 13, 2007

Delightful is the land beyond all dreams,
Fairer than thou eyes should ever see.
There the fruit is on the tree all the year,
And all the year the bloom is on the flower.

There with wild honey drip the forest trees;
The stores of wine and mead shall never fail.
Nor pain nor sickness knows the dweller,
Death and decay come near him never more.

The feast shall cloy not, nor the chase tire,
Nor music cease through the hall;
The gold and jewels of the land of Youth
Outshine all splendors ever dreamed by man.

Thou shall have horses of the fairy breed,
And hounds to outrun the wind;
A hundred chiefs shall follow thee in war,
A hundred maidens shall sing thee to thy sleep.

A crown of sovereignty thy shall wear,
And by thy side a magic blade shall hang,
And thou shall be lord of all the Land of Youth,
And lord of Niam of the Head of Gold.

This poem was devrived from a song Niam of the Golden Hair sang to Oisin in Celtic mythology. Niam was the daughter of the King of the otherworld in other words the king of the Fairies. The song was meant to persuade Oisin to come to the other world and take Niam's hand in marriage. I really liked this song and I thought Id adapt it into a more modern poem.
