Dartford

by Dwite Fry   Aug 13, 2007

I work in the service station
A little outside of Grays
I stare across the river
I'll cross it one of these days

I wanna know what's over the crossing
Wherever it is has to be better than this
I need to know what's over the crossing
Sometimes I think I'll never get over that bridge

There's not my to do in Grays
So you have to decide
To spend your weekends down Romford
Or hanging around Lakeside
And wake up in the morning feeling sick and sore
But I'm not like them, I need to have more

I wanna know what's over the crossing
Wherever it is has to be better than this
I need to know what's over the crossing
Sometimes I think I'll never get over that bridge

But I'm scared the only place I'll get
Is onto the council housing list
I don't think I could survive
If that was how I had to exist
Serving travellers that rub in my face
That they get to go to some other place

I wanna know what's over the crossing
Wherever it is has to be better than this
I need to know what's over the crossing
Sometimes I think I'll never get over that bridge

Appendix
---------------------------------------------------

This was written in response to Steve Earle's 'Someday'.

Grays is a place in Essex - the (Dartford) Crossing crosses the Thames, there really is a service station there - Lakeside, a shopping center (mall) in Thurrock, near Grays - Romford is a place in Essex and my home town.
