Engraved on a stone

by Sparks   Aug 19, 2007

As she walks past him on the hill
Cutting the wheat for autumn festival
She catches his eye watching her move
And for the first time she comes to realize
The feelings tucked up inside her

They talk and laugh and play and kiss
But to go against her father's whim is dangerous
They hold hands on the mountainside
He falls madly in love, heart in his hand

One day they sat upon the spot
They first met among wheat crop
Her father approached, willed and cunning
And while he was cautiously hiding
Laughing and playing, he was silently watching

He grew enraged
How dare this stable boy be with his fine daughter?
He cried out loud and sent the boy running,
He sought out the girl and made her pay

The next week the boy came
Troubled and scared, life threatened just to be here
Crazy with love, not even full moon
In her window he whistled a tune
She came, she spat and she closed her shutters
The end for him, his heart in hand
He threw at the hill upon which they once sat

Next moonlight atop that hill
Where they first met, he stumbled
He stopped and sat and whistled that tune
When deer slept and wolves stopped howling
He unwillingly got up to leave
Until he saw not far from there
A blue stone engraved,

I Love you and will always love you
And I know how much you care

Wow.. this is such a beautiful and touching poem, I can see why it became one of the nominates for the poem contest. It makes you realize how one day you can have everything, be happy and in love.. but then in a split second all of that can be taken away from you. The two lines I loved the most in this poem is,

"They hold hands on the mountainside
He falls madly in love, heart in his hand"

I just find that part to be very romantic.. like a young love, out exploring the woods and the mountains together. There's just one thing I didn't quite catch though.. what happened to the girl at the end of the poem? Anyways, great job!! I loved it, so detailed, organized, and heart touching.. 5/5 <3 <3 <3

Oh wow, the hurt is evident, the pain is sore, the bitter is tangible. It is such a sad poem! I was listening to Could've Been by Mandy Moore and the saddness nearly made me cry(and I don't cry for much of anything) a wonderful work of art. again a 5
