No One Needs to be Alone (Our Memorial)

by Jemma   Aug 20, 2007

No one needs to be alone
Not now at least
In the ashes of the flames that wrought their fury
Not now at least
That the winds blew away the dusts of yesterday
Forgive me the favourite words of today

Now, we look upon the cracked glass of broken seas
A mirror, an illusion of the stormy sky

Where was the dream when we fell into sleep?
So deep was it that it burned to our souls
As the peace of the night fell into the grave
And we fell with it, so far we fell

As ghosts we wander with the hope that we need not be alone
But there's no one to see, no one to be,
Just on your own in the empty visage
The oasis that fades as you bring water to your dry lips

Perhaps we have broken our backs trying
But we carry on with our wounds to fight for tomorrow
But where has tomorrow ever taken us
A wisp of smoke that fades in the breeze

But the air stills even as we wish it
The stagnant breath, stale scents and echoes
All left from our voices as they sounded in years long gone
But memory remains
We only lack the will to survive

No one needs to be alone
Not now at least
In the ashes of the flames that wrought their fury
Perhaps we will once again rise to meet the day

The guards walk the beat of the darkening streets as the bright lights fade
Forgetting the people they were charged to defend

In dull recollection we see the heat waves that took us
From our dim masquerade in the casual rain
To the tropics of Mars where we yearned for the water
But it's so barren, so barren to be alone
So alone and alone and we're never going home

No one needs to be alone
No one needs to be alone
Not now at least
The winds have flown away with the lives of yesterday
Forgive me the favourite words of today
But no one hears us as the tongues wag in the sunlight that seems to shine grey

The ghosts of forever, condemned to live in death, forgotten history
As we see our failing heroes walk away
Their heads rise proudly as they reel off our names
The names that mean nothing
But no one needs to be alone
We see no one but oh how we know we are there
All together, forever, mourning for what we don't know
But we cry the empty, dry tears
We salute in mockery of the men in their suits
Such grim faces
But so light hearts
I wonder what they are thinking

No one needs to be alone
Not now at least
In the ashes of the flames that wrought their fury
Not now at least
That the winds blew away the dusts of yesterday
Forgive me the favourite words of today
