Optimism

by Scott Nickel   Aug 25, 2007

Love is a bowing victim of humility
A growing torrent of vicious spite
Lifting us with its haunting ability
And crashing against tremendous fight

Tumultuous victories within our souls
Tainted memories of painful regret
Fading embers and burnt up coals
Invisible scars we can't forget

Searching helplessly we attempt to fly
To reach the paradise within our mind
But Icarus' fault's our ill-fated cry
And Prometheus' gift was not so kind

Fire of thought is viciously struck
Against times and times of endless loss
While reason's lies do run amuck
Our mourning hearts do wrench and toss

Our thoughts betray emotions
And sacrifice our joy
Our mind strikes down devotions
Till conviction's rather coy

We'll fight forever against demise
Hoping for love's true pleasure
Yet in that hope's a grand surprise
For we'll find our wanted treasure

For love is bitter, dry, and cruel
It is unforgiving, merciless, and tender
But if emotions hold undisputed rule
This stubborn joy will never surrender
And love will live forever
