For Sophie Lancaster

by Dwite Fry   Aug 28, 2007

As you put the boot in, after it all kicked off
Did you think "oh it's ok, it's just some silly Goth?"
As you put the boot in how come you never thought
Does her taste in music make her life worth naught?
As you put the boot just because of what they were
As you put the boot in and took her life from her
Why didn't any of you come to the sad sorry realisation
What you was doing was still bird bashing and discrimination?

Sophie I know I've never met you
I wish I cold swap my life for yours
I wish that it had been me in Lancashire
And you had been safe with him indoors

Now Sophie Lancaster has gone into the light
For the crime of being out on a Saturday Night
I hope all of your friends are so impressed
That you killed a girl because of how she dressed

After you put in the boot in, after you'd all took off
Did you think "oh it's ok it's just some silly Goth"?
After you put the boot into someone so beautiful
After you put the boot in and left her unrecognisable
How can so many people just suddenly stop caring
And excuse their actions because of what she was wearing?

Sophie I know I've never met you
I wish I cold swap my life for yours
I wish that it had been me in Lancashire
And you had been safe with him indoors

Now Sophie Lancaster has gone into the light
For the crime of being out on a Saturday Night
I hope all of your friends are so impressed
That you killed a girl because of how she dressed

Appendix
-------------------------------

Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were attacked in Lancashire on August 11th this year, a few days ago as of this writing, she never regained conciousness and died in hospital. She was assaulted by a gang of youths for being a 'Goth'.
'Put the boot in' means to kick someone - 'bird bashing' means woman beating
I am so POed about this subject matter.

    Hey :-)

Thanks very much for writing that poem, I was very impressed by it in places! It's direct but elegantly-worded at the same time, which is how I like poetry to be :-) The reason I came by your poem was because I was looking for a different Sophie poem on Google (the one that was aired on Radio 4 recently), and found your one instead :-)

I understand your frustration at Sophie's death as well. What happened to her annoys me intensely as well, even though I didn't know her. But she was a fan of dark types of music, as am I, and was attacked by a gang of stupid chavs basically because of how she looked. I hate it sometimes when people are that superficial.

Anyway, partly the reason I'm writing is because I wrote a poem a little while back about Sophie as well. I think it's less direct than yours, but I'm still proud of it, so if you fancy reading it then fire me a message or an e-mail and I'll send you it.

    All the best,
    Andy

P.S. I see you're from Essex. Half my extended family lives in South Benfleet, and I'm from Kent myself although I now live abroad.
