A Gift To Remember

by Aaron Deevers   Sep 1, 2007

My heart beats like it should
Only a few months ago it did not
My heart didn't beat at all

One night after a game
I was heading home
I came around a curve
And there was a deer

To say the least
I had no choice but to hit it
A poor innocent animal
An animal that about killed me

I hit the deer head on
Slide into a ditch with trees
My car smash and crunching as it rolled
My life was to be gone that night

All I can say is a miracle happened
A man passing by saw a light
He stopped and called for help

I owe that man a lot
Stopping to see what that light was
Stopping instead of ignoring it
But that's not why my heart beats today

I had to get a new one in order to live
A young boy around my age had died the day before
It was his heart that saved me

Two young people with life going away
But instead one continued on from another's gift
That young boy had been it a car crash as well

He lost his control after driving late at night
He had fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree head on
It was sad to hear how I got to continue living

A young boy that was only eighteen
Just wanted to go home to see his mom
His mom that was passing away
Today I stand here in front of his grave
Placing flowers as a gift for saving my life

I cry every time I come to visit his grave
Knowing that both a mom and a young boy
Are now together in Heaven

Life has its ways
And as I continue mine
I visit the one boy who saved me
Even though I never knew him
He's a friend in my mind and heart

To give a gift such as a organ
Is what I call a hero
I will never forget that night
Nor the young boy who gave me my life back
