The Soldiers Child (Protector and Believer)

The Protector and The Believer

Are you a believer?
Can you see what I see?
That the bombs are near coming
That we all have to flee
When you were all whispering?
Were you whispering about me?
That maybe we'll be left behind in the bourgeoisie

When you and ma'am were crying
Where you crying over the war?
Crying over the feathers?
What our daddy's fighting for?
When ma'am turned out all the lights,
And we all scrambled under the bed,
Were you both still thinking on what was already dead?

How long ago was it?
When we lost it all?
When ma'am left us in the church hall
God, it's so hard to recall
When was it that the vicar took us in?
When we smelt real air?
When the hurt stopped over this affair?

Please try and remember,
What we wore on the day the war was over
Exactly how your arms shifted around me
How the vicar sent us back to Dover
I remember him crying
My arms around his neck
I wouldn't have left him in a wreck
My ma'am wasn't there the day we got off the train,
Gordon and I we huddled until dawn,
Outside the station,
To keep ourselves warm.
We waited for the men,
To all start coming home,
I couldn't believe it when daddy got off the monster of chrome.

He didn't say a word to us,
Just hugged us in a way,
No matter how bad it was,
It was going to be okay,
And I know that seems a happy story,
But it's not that way for all,
The way that daddy saved us,
Isn't all that we recall.
