The Great Wall of Ego

The Great Wall of Ego

The distance between us is growing stronger every day,
I never thought that I`d have it in me to end it this way;
But a broken heart screams louder than words in my head,
And I`m sick of living off of the empty promises you said.

The vacant "I love you`s" don`t make the cut this time,
Because I`m getting over you on my own, on my dime --
When we lived by yours, we both wound up hurt;
But I mastered the fake smiles, became quite the expert.

Ripping up pictures from the good old days way back when,
I`d go to bed and wake up wanting to see them again,
But too much has happened now, we`re slowly falling apart;
So I rip you out of my memories carefully, starting with your heart.

There`s silhouettes in all of the old cracked picture frames,
Known as the mystery man who took his pride, went down in shame;
The great wall of ego obviously meant more than I ever did,
And I`m drowning in all of the misery that I pathetically hid.

A picture perfect life with the boy of my happily-ever-after dreams,
But it was merely a fantasy, further away than you made it seem;
I`m no Cinderella and you`re definitely no prince charming now,
Strutted in wearing rusty armor, rode in on a black and white cow --

The color is missing from this scene, gone down in flames;
And in Brokenheartsville, this heart break has brought you fame;
You promised me a life of love, but sadness is what you bring;
Living in the could have been`s and what if`s, I`m just so sick of always doing the right thing.

The ending line of this was from a quote on this site; written for a contest on this site...I know that the flow is a little off but that would be why.

    Yeah...this was definitely an awesome piece. And that quote really packed a punch to the already great poem you wrote. Each poem you write is like a story of broken hearts and getting-over-yous. You make the reader feel like the person there. It's amazing. Love it!
