Not Breathing

by Rebecca   Sep 28, 2007

Austere clouds swarm the sky above,
Children's gloomy voices echo in her ears.
Everything around her moves in slow motion,
Even the wet trails of her bitter-sweet tears.

A small, weakened body is cradled in her arms,
Limp and vacant of any kind of emotion.
But why does she care about this child?
She means nothing to her in a bitter notion.

Her screams for help are choking in her despair,
Drinking and driving puts too many lives at stake.
The child's weight gets harder and harder to bear,
She whispers, "I am sorry", but knows it is too late.

As the child's breathing begins to fade away,
Her forgiving eyes show her dying pain.
The child's body is badly tattered and torn,
The ground beneath her begins to bloodstain.

Panic spreads through the child, her body trembling,
There is nothing she can do, but let the fear spread.
So many thoughts and emotions are tangled about,
Like a bomb exploding off in her guilty head.

The child's eyes are fading away, becoming so distant,
Shades of grey conquer, making them no longer blue.
The child's muscles relax; her tight grasp quickly weakens,
Amongst the wind, she mutters, "It's okay, I forgive you."

And with the child's passing, she is left alone,
Unable to let go, the wind quietly fades.
No more warmth, no more breath,
The child's presence slowly decays.

Looking up at the uncomforting sky with teary eyes,
She whispers, "Please, please forgive me Lord."
Disturbed that she took the life of an innocent child,
"Forgive me, for she is not breathing no more."
