Lucy

by selene   Oct 2, 2007

Lucy, she walks beside the man-made lake
lit by city lights
and she thinks about...jumping in
Lucy
She shapes her words carefully,
concentrates on her lips
mouthing O's prolonged, and Lucy
she doesn't know a thing
about us

But Lucy, she wants to be alone
Although boys cling like gum
on her muddy shoes, picked up
from a back alley
Lucy, she doesn't mind the sticky
feeling
It makes her feel giddy, makes
her different
like we don't know a thing
about her

I love this poem, the way it comes full circle. I wonder why she's called Lucy, though I certainly know many Lucies.
