Another Day

by Viola   Oct 4, 2007

She sits in that brown wooden chair, hair on her face
Eyes are all red with dark circles underneath
The board is only 5 feet away, but it's all becoming too hard to see
As tears start to roll down her face, but she forcefully rubs them away
Another fifteen minutes left, the time goes by slowly today
As she looks at the minutes she's wasting day by day
The teacher asks her a question from last night's homework
But she can't find an answer, so she sheepishly looks away
The class turns to stare then goes back to their own thing
She can hear voices speaking but none of them make any sense
A blur--pure distraction, it's hard to keep focused this way
She feels a kick and a sharp pain, her body's too tired
It can't take it anymore, sleep hasn't come for days
So she puts her head down on the desk and closes her eyes
Meanwhile holding her belly with one hand, she rubs it across
And she says, "Baby, we're gonna make it through somehow."
Just a young girl, alone in this world, she only turned 16
Has no home to safely return to, just a house with brick walls
Has no one to help her through it, they all gave up long ago
Just an escape, that's all she needs, just one break
Someone to lean on to help her with this new life growing inside
A baby, but she's merely a child herself, how's she going to raise one?
And she cries, but no one knows it, because she hides her tears
If she had said "no", a better decision, and maybe she wouldn't be here
But how could she know what was not right if no one had warned her
And now everyone's judgemental, she's never given a chance
To be someone, to make something of herself
Cause the life she once dreamed of is even further away it seems
She needs that change, but she'll never get out of town now
Forget all those dreams she had as a child, her vision of a future
It's brushed away, forgotten, and rusting in a corner
Cause that one simple mistake that night has turned her life upside-down
And it just slipped out of her hands, as a new one begun to grow
But with no one there, and no one to truly hold on to
God only knows if she'll make it through
The bell rings loudly and suddenly, startling her somehow
And it takes all her strength to pull herself up
At that moment, the only thought running through her head
Is "Baby, we're gonna make it through somehow."
So she holds on for another day
