A hint of linen in the air A smile across the innocent face Happiness in all her naivety A presence that cannot be replaced Her youthful curiosity Betrayed her on this day A hint of foreshadowing A taste of dismay This child meant the world to me A delilah behind her ear Eyes closed for just a moment Just a moment, a moment that was dear As she stood at the river's edge Her fate she had no control Stared back at her in distortment Then in a flash swallowed her whole This river she loved so much Deceived her, ended her life It marked the end of an era, And the start of my strife I reached down for the hand The hand that I loved Woman, save your child! Show us what you're made of! Icy water hit me like gunshot I searched for the face The face that meant so much to me The face sank beneath the waves Confusion overcame my body Delilah, oh Delilah, where did you go? The blue eyes that I loved Have drifted down somewhere below It's been five years since then Everywhere I see her face Her voice lingers around me This anniversary will never be the same Every tear I shed, A pill takes its place Forgetting is impossible That day cannot be erased Biting my lip This pain and I, we coexist This razor to the wrist My arm blood-kissed So this time I return to the river This time will be the last The car accelerates and sinks to the bottom My final breaths begin to pass The water flooded in my mouth Taste like the tears I've shed Slowly I taste copper Tears? No, blood instead My eyes were barely closing My soul belonged in this lake I saw those eyes, those sapphire eyes I knew, Delilah, it was no mistake This story of a mother Her daughter's death, she held the blame Beneath the lake they have a reunion Their anniversary will never be the same copyright to: me, Helen Gutierrez ***This poem is based on the song Yellow Butterfly by Meg & Dia
