Fake It

Fake It

I can see right through you,
My 6-year best friend.
I had not a clue,
'Till your words seemed to bend.

As we pondered with worry,
And our hearts filled with shame,
Our friend walked up to me,
And your smile hid the blame.

I can see it in your face,
The way you want to cry.
But you keep your mask in place:
A decaying fake smile.

I keep my mask off,
And our friend seems to know,
That while mine has dropped,
Your facade starts to show.

But you whisper to me,
As she turns away,
"Girl, let it be...
Just pretend we're okay."

So I copy your mask,
As she turns back to us.
We all try to laugh,
While our true feelings rust.

Why do we have,
To pull of these stunts?
I think, as we laugh,
"My best friend's a dunce."
