Is America Really That Great?

by The Girl From Yesterday   Oct 15, 2007

This isn't a poem, merely my view and opinion of America. Feel free to send me messages with your opinions, but please do not say that mine is wrong, for no opinion is wrong, for it is an opinion, but not necessarily a fact.

Many say America is 'the best country', but really, is that true? America, like everything else, is not perfect, and has many faults. The people who create America contribute to these faults, for they have faults of their own. Why is it that all through life, adults are always telling kids that violence is not the answer, then teach those same kids about all of the wars that solved all of America's problems? America is in war right now, with Iraq. I was in third grade when the terrorist attacks happen, and I still remember those feelings that I felt, even though I was young. I remember the anger and resentment toward the terrorists, and the pride for our country for standing strong. I no longer feel that pride for America. I have now become aware of so many issues that America has, and our nation is so contradictory. Take capital punishment for example. Why do we kill people who kill people, to show people that killing people is wrong? Why do convicted murderers get life, when innocent babies are killed every day through abortion? We spend around $12 million each HOUR on the war in Iraq, and our country is so in debt, and yet we have people living on the streets, literally starving. Shouldn't we supply for our people before we supply for other countries? That may sound selfish, but look at my opinion. If we cannot even be strong for all of our people, how can we be expected to be strong for others? We should help other countries, because America has been very blessed, but before we can really do that, we first need to help ourselves.

Some very strong opinions. I reckon this could be made into a beautiful poem. I'd sit down with it, and gradually work it into a form, it doesn't need to rhyme.

Good work, feelings are key to good poems :D

    Keep writing,
    Emily :)

Very very nice. You made great true points that I agree with. American is a lot more effed up than a lot of people think it is. Great job expressing your point of view.
