Dazed and Abused [Glosa Verse]

by HOLLYWOODxBANGBANG   Oct 16, 2007

Lines originally sung by Miranda Lambert,
Song --> Gunpowder and Lead
--------------------------------------------------------------------

He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll,
Don`t that sound like a real man?
I'm gonna show him what a little girls made of,
Gunpowder and lead.

It`s a quarter past twelve and I can hear his truck,
Rumbling down the gravel road to me,
My heart may have just dropped to my toes,
But I`m not gonna let him sense the fear;
I light up a cigarette, open up a can of beer,
Waiting to hear his voice make the call.
He doesn`t know it yet, but I bet y`all he will,
When he opens the door and looks at me,
I know it already that he expects me to take the fall --
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll.

Ten years ago, before they hauled him away,
It may have been different, I`d take the pain,
But these lonely years gave me time to do the thinkin`
That should have been done so long ago.
I rode the hour hand on the clock for a few months,
Living off of midnight cigarettes and no plan,
But the clock ticked away the time he spent in the slammer,
Doing the time for what I knew he`d do again.
With fury, he tells me I`m lucky that I never ran,
Don`t that sound like a real man?

Maybe if it would have clicked before it came to this,
That I should have held onto my pride,
And that I should have ran when I had the chance,
Than we wouldn`t be standing here tonight,
Fighting it out like we used to.
And I can`t remember a time when we were in love,
It`s been way too long now, I`m too far gone,
But if I`m gonna be alone, than I`d rather do it on my own,
I`ve had enough of this, I need to rise above --
I'm gonna show him what a little girls made of.

Ten years in the county jail, and it still doesn`t hit him,
So if the truth doesn`t kick him down, I will;
I`ve never owned up to my full potential,
I`ve spun my self worth around and around in circles,
And I`ve let him throw me and my heart around,
But if I would have just let my heart do the talking instead,
I wouldn`t be standing here, back at the start of this mess.
Dazed and abused, I think I`ve had just about enough,
And this gun is gonna explain all I`ve never said --
Gunpowder and lead.

Glosa-Verse: A Spanish form invented by court poets in the 14th and 15th centuries. An opening quatrain, called a 'cabeza' is chosen from another poet, or song. The glosa elaborates or 'glosses' on the quatrain with four ten line stanzas, their concluding lines taken consecutively from the quatrain and their sixth and ninth lines rhyming with the borrowed tenth.

    I really need to try this form. I've saying over and over that I will, and I've yet to get round to it... but it looks fun!

    This poem was just amazing. I'm kind of speechless, I don't know what to say.

    "I'm gonna show him what a little girls made of." - There should be an apostrophe after in "girl's".

    :] Overall: wonderful.

    WoW! you never cease to amaze. your talent grows with each poem. I like your rhyming better, but your non-rhyming is VERY good too. Congrats on reaching your 500th poem and keep going!
