Playground Lullaby

by ari   Oct 18, 2007

We're sitting beneath the red plastic slide,
watching and running from the rain that is
kissing the ground.
Would you ever kiss me goodbye,
so soft no one would ever notice?
Would you leave a little piece of yourself behind?
Perhaps a heartbeat I could catch before you turn away.
We're hiding beneath the red plastic slide,
the lightning illuminating our faces.
Our gasps are lost in the wind,
our eyes shining with untold secrets
finally brought to light.
We lost ourselves in between the breaths
we forgot to take.
I'm searching for the sigh that brought us back to life,
the intake of breath that will stay
in a locket around my throat.
I need a release.
My lips are swollen with all the 'I love yous'
that I could never bring myself to say.
We're shielding ourselves from the rain.
It'll wash away our pretenses,
show the truth that's hidden beneath
our rain-soaked clothes
and behind the front we put up before our eyes.
It penetrates the skin,
but I swear, I wear a second one just for you.
We stay under the little red plastic slide,
watching the swings creak and the chains sway.
This little playground never knew anything more
than children's screams and band-aids.
It's not ready to learn of the sweet nothings
we whispered when we knew no one was listening
to the pretty tune whistling along with the wind.
It blows our regrets away,
this little playground lullaby.
