Keep Her Inside

Feel the heart, find the core
Seek the woman, ripped and torn
Deepest layer, darkest fears
Feel the pain, taste the tears.

Break the guard, crumble walls
See the fake, standing small
Expose the lies, the first defense
Of twisted truth, and false pretense.

There she is, black and blue
Mind is cracked, heart is bruised
Biting nails, shifty eyes
Shaking hands, and muffled cries.

Cowering child, hide from the light
Tired of losing, no incentive to fight
Can no longer stand, too broken to fall
Say what you will, no comfort at all.

Failures in mind, rooted too deep
Tell me I'm fake, show me I'm cheap
Withdraw to the dark, cover the pain
Paint on a face, hide all the strain.

It may not be perfect, may not seem worthwhile
But a day without tears or a hint of a smile,
Even if just a glance and I know it's pretend,
It's the best that I'll ever deserve in the end.
