I Remember

by Danae Lenz   Oct 29, 2007

I remember how it used to be
when you loved me
and I loved you.
I still do.
Do you remember
or have you forgotten so easily?
I remember the random calls,
the late night walks in the park,
kissing, loving, in the dirt
or clinging to each other in the streets.
I remember how good your body felt
pressed up against mine,
heavy breathing,
hearts beating.
I remember when you held my hand
and the world was whole again,
less broken
more loving.
I remember hiding -
hiding who we were -
who we ARE,
wishing we could be like normal couples.
We are like them, really.
Our love is the same.
I remember when we made life simple again.
Just you and me,
the birds and the bees,
the sun, the moon and the stars.
A rainstorm was a dance.
For me, it still is.
I remember writing.
Our stories, our characters,
reflecting our inner selves.
I love your writing.
It's beautiful, lovely,
beyond written words on a page,
beyond this.
I remember when I said 'yes',
happiness overflowing,
kissing over and over in my basement.
Was it too good to me true?
Happiness invites destruction.
I should have known.
Lastly, I remember how to say 'good-bye'.
Saying 'yes' was so much easier.
Nothing has ever been this hard,
but invisiblity is not a super-power
I ever wanted to possess.
