The Other Reflection

by Ariel Gallucci   Nov 9, 2007

I have a small house, she has a big one.
I have a big family, she has a small one.
People say Im pretty, they say shes prettier.
I dont have a lot of money, she has tons.
My parents are happily divorced, hers are happily married.
I have many friends, she has more.
Im good with guys, shes better.
I can play field hockey, she can play lacrosse.
I take ballet and hip-hop; she takes ballet, hip-hop, tap, and jazz.
I get good grades, she gets even better ones.
I had a hard childhood, she had a great one.
Im going on to a nice college; shes going to a better one.
I am self conscious, shes full of confidence.

Everyday I strive to be better than her,
Everyday I strive to have everything she has and more,
Everyday I strive to be something Im not just because I want to be like her.
Everyday I strive to be a girl, I would hate to be.
Someone who I never wanted to become.
I look in the mirror and all I see is a girl looking down at herself,
For what though?
A small house with a big family, parents that are better apart than together.
Lots of friends, who care for me?
I compare myself to her everyday
When shes nothing but the reflection on the other side of the mirror.
