A whole song (but it wasn't even you)

by Espoirfailed   Nov 14, 2007

I only asked for a line
But you would have given me a whole song.
I know it's me who got it all wrong
And I'm so sorry to have strung you along.
If you weren't so nice you'd probably hate me now
And when all I want is to have you somehow
I know it was you all along.
How could I have got this so wrong?
I suppose nice guys really do finish last,
But if you've got the time for me,
And you always did and always have,
Please come by so I can gather the stardust that falls
after you've passed.
Time was short in the first place,
and odds were on you for last place.
I'm afraid you won't have time for a new race.
But I'm rooting for the underdog.
I'd set sail with you any day
But you probably wouldn't want to share my boat.
I can't say as I blame you anyway
I wish he was you and
I'd hate me if I were you.
But I'm not and I appear to have forgot that
I asked you for a line
And you offered me a whole song.
I asked you for a line
And I got it all wrong.
