Alone

by Vampire Kisses   Nov 17, 2007

Our last night together,
I'll never leave your side.
All night I'll be right there,
Holding your hand tight.

You put up a good fight,
Now its time to relax.
Forget about the past,
Because you'll be a free woman at last.

I sat next to your bed,
In that peaceful hospital room.
Only light in the room,
Was the one above your bed.

The TV is off,
Blinds are closed.
Not a sound was heard,
Not a word was spoken.

I glanced over at you,
Saw your eyes open.
I waited a moment before asking,
"How are you doing?"

"I'm doing okay,"
You replied.
Your words so soft,
So gently spoken.

I rubbed my thumb,
Along the back of your hand.
I saw a small smile,
Form upon your face.

I knew the time was near,
That He would take you from me.
I held back the tears,
Because I didn't want you to go.

"Promise me you wont leave me behind,"
I asked of you.
"I wont, I'll always be here,"
You said, pointing to my heart.

You smiled,
I smiled back.
Tears started flowing,
Down my face.

"Now you promise me something,"
You said after a while.
"Promise me, you'll never let go,"
You said, holding my hand tighter.

I held your hand with both of mine,
And finally got the breath to reply.
"I promise with all my heart,
To never let go."

You smiled,
And closed your eyes.
Soon you were fast asleep,
And in your own little world.

But little did I know,
It was your time to go.
I said your name,
And got no answer.

I dropped to my knees by the bed,
Crying so hard I couldn't see.
Still holding your hand in both of mine,
I felt it grow cold.

"You said you wouldn't leave me behind,"
I whispered, hoping you could hear.
"You broke your promise,
Now I'm left alone."
