Catching Snowflakes

by Lyndsay Kalyta   Nov 28, 2007

On the first snowfall of the year
Dad began pulling out our scarves and mitts
We caught him wiping away a tear
As he said "Looks like your boots don't fit"

As we each zipped up our own coats
He looked mesmerized at us
Our independence hurts him the most
As he said, "My little girls are growing up"

He tried to hold our hands
As we ran past him, out of the door
He's the only one who doesn't understand
Why we don't need him anymore

Dad followed us into the snow
As we told him to go back inside
But there was something he wanted us to know
His emotions he could no longer hide

"I remember making angels over there,
And building Frosty right about here
I know you three may not be aware
But losing my girls is my worst fear

"I remember catching snowflakes with you
Back when you wanted to play with me
Now you've got your own things to do
And these fresh flakes are just memories

"Reminding me that my little girls
Are growing up too fast
I used to be your whole world
Now I am coming in last"

In truth, we clearly knew
Of each memory Dad had recalled
They were our favourite things to do
Because of him, we cherished them all

We didn't know dad felt this way
We didn't know he missed us three
What he said touched our hearts that day
It was a while before one of us could speak

"Dad, it's Christmas Eve,
And there's only one gift that will do
Could you take our hands, please
'Cause we want to catch snowflakes with you"
