Strangers on a Train

by dollwithafrown   Dec 15, 2007

He's a man with a past, scars all around,
Which have engraved themselves into him;
Never allowing him to forget
Or move on,
Leaving him to sit and dwell;
His mind going at the same pace
As this speedy train.

She sits by herself:
A delicate silhouette,
So fragile and alone, yet beautiful.
Her image produces utter perfection,
So her scars remain
Invisible to the eye;
Her pain masked.

He's mistaken for a tramp
At one single glance:
Couldn't he just have had a bad day?
Why do we judge to quickly?
Is that what our world has become?
Has this what it's always been?
He doesn't care.

Her heart is barely beating now.
She's lost her faith
In one single deadly, terrifying year,
So she barricades herself
Among superficial objects,
Unwilling to really be noticed
Yet he's caught her eye.

At one glance an entire decade
Of information is shared.
A tiny smile, which usually would have gone unnoticed
Is a signal of understanding between
Two strangers who share the same life,
Yet completely different exterior images.
For the first time, neither one is judged.
