The Girl

by RB   Dec 21, 2007

The Girl stands in the field,
that she has known for many years.

As tears flow down her face,
she watches as the words burn.

The fire dances in her eyes,
and she can taste her bitter tears.

She feels his arm around her,
and somehow his touch seems to calm her.

She knows how he feels about her,
and she wishes she could feel the same way.

She doesn't understand why she leads him on,
and at the same time she pushes him away.

She doesn't understand her own feelings.

She knows her friends would not approve,
she knows she shouldn't have feelings for him.

Her heart is telling her to explain,
but her lips refuse to let the words out.

She tries so hard,
but she cannot bring herself to tell him the truth.

She searches his eyes for guidance,
but she finds none.

His eyes tell her that he is longing to be with her,
and that he is hurting inside.

Once she realizes his pain,
tears once again begin to flow down her face.

They share one last hug,
and she never wants to let go,
but she knows she must.

She pulls away,
and begins to walk down the road.

She wants to look back,
and call his name,
but her feet keep walking away.

She knows the summer has now come to an end,
and there is no turning back.

They promised to remain friends forever,
but she knows they will drift apart.

As they head down different paths in their lives,
she knows she has just lost her first love,
and that she has just broken her first heart.

She has one last urge to run back into his arms,
but fear manages to hold her back.

She has so many questions,
and so many thoughts,
but she keeps on walking,
further and further away.

She thinks the answers await her in the future,
but in truth, she has just left them in the past.
