The Chaos Theory

by Shaikha MB   Dec 28, 2007

When deep in thought,
My mind is caught,
In a mixture of emotions,
And a world of commotions.

All at once,
The thoughts like to pounce,
Especially at night,
When there is no light

Just as your getting in bed,
Your eyes all red,
And feeling as heavy as lead.

Running like a river,
Sometimes causing you to shiver,
All the what if's,
And why not's,
Causing your head to spin,
Only to think once again,
If only I had a pen.

Seconds go past,
Minutes won't last,
Hours will soon die,
Days continue by a lie,
You then think that no matter what,
No little chat,
And definitely no big hat,
Sleeping cat,
Or flying bat,
Could have changed what happened in the past.

But truth be told,
I think it could,
And most likely would,
If given the chance,
When a butterflies wings dance,
In the cold wind trying to find,
Something kind,
That will allow it to relax,
Just for a second and flex,
Before it continues its short journey,
With little irony.

What if it were to land on a busy bridge?
At the tip of the edge?
Becoming a tiny creature,
Holding the fate of many more then a future.

What would happen if its landing tipped the balance?
Breaking any possible silence?
Snapping like a twig,
Something so big.

What lives would come to a sudden end?
What lives would be changed, unable to mend?
What effect would it have on the future?
Not to mention the entire culture!

On the other hand,
What if it didn’t land?
And all went well?
What changes would that cause?
Would there still be a just cause?

Silly little butterfly,
You just fly,
Oblivious to your actions,
For we hold the reactions!

Such a complicated life but interesting,
Always changing,
All those late night thoughts,
Must they always be about theories and queries?
Must I always think of the chaos theory?
Or should I just shut my sleepy eyes,
And ignore the beautiful butterflies?

I loved how your poem flowed so nicely and the rhyming was well put. It was a very long poem, but you managed to lead back to a point which was nice. My favorite line would have to be:

"What would happen if its landing tipped the balance?
    Breaking any possible silence?
    Snapping like a twig,
    Something so big."

I could try to give you a reason, but it mostly wouldn't make sense. The content is true, I'm a fan of the Chaos Theory, in which they often use a butterfly as an example, it worked for your poem very awesomely(forgive my lack of better grammar). All in all a very lovely poem.
