I Love You

I Love You
By Mark Spencer

I was once very cavalier
With the words "I love you."
I used them often in my life,
Though seldom were they true.

I have always moved too quickly;
I had a dream, you see.
Riding off into the sunset,
Just my soul mate and me.

But one can't understand true love,
Until it fills the heart.
For only then can lovers know,
The power it imparts.

Thus I will never say again,
An empty "I love you."
I have bathed in its full measure,
True love has earned its due.

For no treasure is more precious,
No gift from God more true;
And I know what it means, my love,
When I say "I love you."

End.
