On My Way Home

by Lauriel Chambers   Jan 7, 2008

I'm on my way home
it's almost midnight
just staying awake
is a constant fight

And the streetlights flood
my tired, brown eyes
just minutes ago
we said our good-byes

Back there in your car
you kissed me good night
my hand brushed your face
while you held me tight

Now a misty haze
resides in the air
and the pavement shines
underneath the glare

Of the silver moon
that's lighting the way
I count the moments
that we shared today

Sitting on the swings
walking in the park
hanging out downtown
kissing in the dark

In our secret place
where no one could see
I smiled as I felt
you all over me

Wrapped up in blankets
and kissing your lips
feeling your body
with my fingertips

A stoplight's ahead
I begin to slow
they're playing our song
on the radio

And the light's red rays
beam down from above
creating a glow,
reminding me of

The campfire you built
in your yard for me
the brightest flames that
you ever did see

So we watched the blaze
then turned to the sky
we stared at the stars
I looked in your eyes

I said "I love you"
and you said it too
time is so precious
when it's spent with you

Lying face to face,
your breath warmed my nose
then you rubbed my feet
to warm up my toes

The light has turned green
and I'm on my way
still can't stop smiling
thinking of our day

My hair smells like smoke
my shirt smells like you
I breathe it all in
and in my rearview

Are the eyes of a girl
who loves you so much
who needs nothing more
than your gentle touch

It doesn't matter
where you and I go
'cause no matter what
I want you to know

That I could have fun
staring at the wall
long as I'm with you
I'm not bored at all

Into my driveway
I'm making a right
just wishing you could
stay with me tonight

I go in my room
crawl into my bed
with visions of you
dancing in my head

I wish you were here
I wish you could be
all tangled up in
the covers with me

I'd hold you until
we both fall asleep
'til we both get lost
in our dreams so deep

I let out a sigh
just thinking that through
you know I wanna
wake up next to you

I love you so much
that I could just cry
I am so lucky
and I don't know why

Whatever I did
to deserve this love
it's something I should
do a lot more of

Although I'm tired
I don't want to sleep
I want to lie here
so that I can keep

Thinking about us
and our crazy day
memories flicker
as I drift away

I pull the blankets
right up to my chin
staying awake is
a fight I can't win

I've found my way home
it's after midnight
and the moonlight shines
in my room so bright

Just moments ago
we said our good-byes
I think about you
then I close my eyes.

Very well written. It's little long though but at the same time very captivating. So much of love flows in this poem. It's lovely!
