House Of Our Own

by brie kelly wise   Jan 13, 2008

I knew it was a mistake when we left town
Left everybody hanging on a word
I gave you my youth and I took your dream life
We made a house of our own
We'll make it perfectly fine without a picket fence

But the day you received the call
The call that took you way far away
Far away as you left the girl with a letter in her hand
I held that letter to my heart as I put it on my mirror
I stare at it every morning as my heart drains tears
I should've known better than to leave everything behind
Now I'm left as I give my heart to Alyssa

She tells me every morning, "I miss daddy."
What am I supposed to tell her when she asks when you're coming home
I hug her tight and whisper, "soon"
But how is she supposed to believe me when I have a hard time believing myself

One early December morning I hear a car pull into the driveway
I run to the front door as my heart skips a beat
I should've known you'd come back some day
I ran into your arms, with Alyssa on my heel

I think back to the moment I left home
The day we left my mother hanging on a word
I'll give you my dream life as you make me yours
And with me in your arms,
We'll hold up this house of our own
