So Where Are You?

by Neil Marsden   Jan 18, 2008

I can hear the children sleeping, far away in their innocent dreams,
And the mantle clock mocks me with its taunting chime of 5.
Not long since the dark day preceding,
Yet much nearer to the cold day ahead.

What unaccountable ironies lie awaiting,
How will fall the invisible coin in the air.
Will my nightmare mutate there before me
Or will the soft glove of fate shake my hand.

This life in it's apparent mystery,
Just shows nothing to startle me now,
As all surprise met demise,
Many 'character building' experiences ago.

Today I will cower behind familiarity,
To firmly attach me to the ground.
Discarded ladders will be avoided,
And I will scatter salt on the black cat next door.

If by chance I should encounter submission,
I will happily sink down beneath.
And all the hopeless and crumbling monuments,
Will be embraced and supported by me.

I will relentlessly search out the ill fated,
And submit at each junction I see.
In the darkness of night I will shoulder the light,
And all kindness will be marked down to me.

Should my clash with my conscience scream justice,
I will steadfastly face the nine tails.
And if justification then calls to greet me,
Will just accept as a cruel twist of fate.

In the absence of rational reason,
I am left to consider in doubt
If the resulting, immeasurable agony,
Isn't more than just matter of life.

If all else fails, I am left utterly deserted,
Obliged in all sense to surmise.
That maybe God in his incomprehensible purpose,
Can't explain why he would do this to us.
