My Skeleton in the Closet

by scars and stories   Jan 27, 2008

The skeleton in my closet
Looks out at me with soulless eyes
Watching me as I try to let sleep claim me.
Just when I am about to forget
It pulls up a chair and sits down next to me
Ever there, ever watching,
My constant reminder of a mistake unforgotten.
I apologize to it, I grovel, I beg its forgiveness
But it just keeps staring, unmoving, unchanged
My burden forever.
What else could I have done?
"I'm sorry I hurt you" I call to it,
And then, ever so slowly,
It turns to me and opens its terrifying mouth,
"You never hurt me, you killed me,
And I shall lie with you in your grave."
It follows me still, my shadow, my keeper,
Until its gruesome promise is fulfilled.
My secret, my curse, my lifelong companion.
