This poems strikes me on a level that is thought provoking and an intriguing perception of how humanity is met with challenge or disappointment in life. I find it especially powerful how the final stanza reinforces the title, and in my personal experience, that how the feeling of "giving up" is related to being engulfed by flame. More often than not when I'm screwing up, I'm angry, and fire is quite often an association of rage and anger. To me this poem is just trying to inform the reader that these "singes" or "burns" are almost always present throughout life (everyday hassles). It is perhaps encouraged that we accept this fact and go on throughout our lives trying to achieve a balance of warmth. We must do our best to maintain our inner zen, and avoid fueling the fires of rage. |
