Do poems always have to rhyme?

Hmm..well, to me, I find rhyming poems are better, but the most important thing is the idea of the poem and how it can touch the heart..

Well most poems do rhyme but not all have to. Some poems are better if they rhyme and some are better if you just go free style. The important thing in the poem is not necessaarily the rhyme but the contact of what it is talking about.

Most poems rhyme, but I've found some of my best don't. just be true to your feelings and don't worry about what everyone else thinks. Shanik

Rhyme schemes are restrictive and unnecessary unless you're writing a nursery rhyme.

Why limit your word choice even more when you can have something better; it means the reader is just reading it waiting for the rhyme at the end. Assonance or bits of rhyme in poems should help move the poem on, or set some kind of tone in the piece. As writers, we should be opening ourselves up - not tying ourselves down.

No. The art of poetry is learning to connect with the poets work. Rhyming is not essential as long as you balance what the scene is about and the art of getting your meaning clear

No. You just have to express yourself. :D There's different forms of poetry; you can use one of those forms, or just write it however you feel like writing it. I feel more comfortable rhyming my poems, but that's just me. :D

Poetry has many different forms in structure, rhyming and expression, not all poems have a structure and not all poems rhyme. so no poetry doesnt have to rhyme, the most important thing to do is to express yourself. XD

It depends on the poetry form, there are many to choose from.

Do wannabe poets always need to try to rhyme?

  • bhaskaryya

And rhymes can royally screw a poem unless you are as good as the best poets out there. But then again, if you are that good, you would rather eat crap than rhyme.

Everytime I log back on here someone is asking if poems have to rhyme. My advice is *read some poetry*.

Good writers are good readers. Rhyme is a device.

What about rhyming some but in some places doing free verse?

or is it best to stick with all rhyming or all free verse?

  • Jayc

What matters most forme is not the rhyme, but the feeling and emotions behind it. and how your writing animates your feeling

  • Trude

It doesn't matter if your poems don't have rhyming as long as you can express your feelings

  • Nicko

Rhyming at times becomes forced as its hard to find the right word and we have to compromise...

free verse is easier to express yourself, maybe add a little rhyme or a bit of alliteration, the worlds your oyster...

Its ok.... always rhyme is not important. but it gives the reader easiness. and good flow of poetry.. but sometimes rhyme is not necessary... hope this information is helpful for u

A poem in my oppinion just has to stir so type
of emotion and some kind of flow to keep the reader reading. rhyming is the easiest way to
keep that flow. which like i said keeps the reader
    interested.

This topic always makes me want to cry/scream.
FREE VERSE is the way to express your words in the most natural unbound and human way.
    Rhyming is for singing. :)

I agree on the making you want to scream when people ask this question.
This question also makes me glad I like spoken word format much more than others.
    The reason?...
Well a lot of times people get so caught up in rhymes or formats they lose the original feeling of the message they wanted to share in the first place.
Shouldn't the message be more important than the format?
Rhymes great if they fit if not screw em :D
Id rather read someones stuff that didn't rhyme and had a bizarre format but had raw emotional force behind it than someones poem that had structure and rhyme but lost what mattered most about the poem in the first place.
Don't get caught up in what it is supposed to be don't worry about rhymes and structures or acceptance by any of us. Robert Frost didn't (the death of a hired man or the mountain ;From the Frost Early Poetry book 2004, cant remember original books name)
If you can pen emotion, raw and powerful. If you can pen something you can feel no matter rhyme or not. Then you have succeeded where 99% of writers fail.
Ok I am rambling sorry lol

For me, I do not like a poem with no rhyming!
I don't know why.. maybe because I love music, and I think that a poem with no rhyming is like a song without melody!

  • happilyneverafter

Rhymes sure can make poems sound more melodically and it does connect each paragraph perfectly with each other unfortunately it edges the choice of the vocabularies usage.

If you over think the poem, just so it will rhyme, you will ruin the poem. No they do not have to always rhyme, though if they do, that may be an added effect for the reader, or audience. Besides most modern poetry does not rhyme. Okay I hope I have made a point, good luck and happy writing.

There isn't a problem if your poems don't rhyme unless it has a great impact..!
well, my initial poems were rhymeless but it attracted many votes and appreciation..

Well naturally I seem to be think in rhyme, but that's a personal thing. I feel that choosing to write in rhyme is just like choosing to write about nature rather than love. It's all in preference.
