Is the voting on here fair?

It really annoys me when another writer down-votes on a piece of my work without telling me why! I don't think my work always warrants a '5', but please let's be adults and not children! If we work together we all improve.

I don't see any of your poems down-voted, so why complain? Let me ask you this, Is anything really fair in life?

Also, Votes don't really mean anything, I've seen excellent poems voted as a 3 or 4. And I've seen just ok poems voted as for a 5. Votes show nothing, it's the comments/critique that you get that should help you improve, not the votes.

I totally agree, which is why I appreciate any honest comment I receive.

    Thank you for your advice.

Most poems I read are no where close to a five, and it annoys me when I see great job as a comment, give those same people an honest comment and they write about how they hated your poem and voted it low.

Then again, I'm no where near a five, possibly a four if I worked at it.

I see what you mean. Maybe a higher rating scale would be useful, or maybe a different system all together. Maybe having a choice of what age group votes on your poems?

    Haha I'll complain about upvoting.

Sure the voting system is fair! All voting systems are fair. Sometimes it's just the people who use them that aren't.

That's why I don't usually take votes into account. The rating of a poem - from what I can see - usually only seems to come from how well liked a poet is by his or her peers.

Okay people - humble pie is well and truly eaten!

    No more moaning from me!

    Thanks

Illu, I don't agree with having to read poetry to improve, it does help, but I for one hate reading poetry. I read very few poems years ago and they were always kept short. LOL I guess we can learn to love the things we hate though.

In what way is it fair to "rate" people's poetry?

I think we should remove the voting system. It just promotes popularity contests and provides an unnecessary ability to downplay people.

Poetry is poetry. It isn't good or bad or anything. It's words that you either enjoy or dislike. But everyone interprets it differently, so why overrule an opportunity with a silly voting option?
    Sheesh.

The only reason i wouldnt mind votes is because if alot of people rate a poem high. Then more people read it. So then i get more opportunities to spread my entertainment and art to others :D
