I was just wondering wether or not anyone knows about being a mature age student at university.

Is it over 21 your allowed to be a mature age student?

Is it more difficult to get into if you're not applying straight after you've finished school?

I don't know the rules everywhere, I know in Canada you have to be atleast 19 and out of school for 2 years I believe. It is easier to get in if you can go through a college, atleast here anyway, I know our local college offers University courses.

^^You can go to University when your 18, I meant being accepted as a mature student, you have to be atleast 19 or out of school for a certain number of years.

I live in Australia and apparently the age is 21 to be a mature age student.

The problem is you need a UAI to attend university. Which means you need a certain amount of units. 10 to be exact. I'm currently studying Visual Arts. Advanced English, Modern History, Ancient History, Photography & Visual Design. Photography and Visual design do not count towards a UAI as they are endorsed classes. This I wasn't aware of. Now seeing as my classes wont allow me to get a UAI and be accepted into University, I'm stumped on what i'm suposed to do. Apparently being a mature age student is an option.

I was just wondeering if anyone knew what that involved.

Thanks to everyone who has replied.

Well in Ontario the mature student age is 21, if you just take a look at a few uni's websites, it's one of the admissions requirements...

    also
-you need to be away from education for at least 2 years
    -be a resident of canada
-and provide proof that you can manage university classes

Applying to universities in Canada is a fairly easy process, as long as you achieved at least a 70avg in highschool you're bound to get accepted, especially in art programs.

Your portfolio/interview is what will give you a competitive edge.

If your thinking about going into more academic programs such as science or business an admissions avg of 75+ is what you should aim for. With at least a 60 in the math prerequisites.

Just visit the website of the university your looking to go to, or hit them up with a phone call, they will provide you with plenty of information.

Remember: university is a multi-million dollar business like no other, as long as you meet their standards, you're the one doing them a favor by going their. You have the knowledge at your fingertips, so don't be intimidated.

My friends dad works in the admission department at a university lol...he was rambling on about this question for awhile.

Someone without a diploma, over a certain age or out of school for a number of years, is considered a mature student.

    Jess,

Thanks very much for that. Tafe was an option I was looking at also. I was told either to look into Tafe or look into becoming a mature age student for university.

We were asked to select classes then a teacher would go over them asking each student if they wanted a UAI. I said yes and a teacher told me I had the classes to get into Uni. Obviously not that. Seems to be one big mistake to me.

I believe I either need two or three more units to get into uni. Tafe seems to be the way to go.
