Wellington Earthquake

Glad that you suffered no damage. 5.5 can deliver a wallop.

As someone who has experienced earthquakes in California and in Mexico, I think the scariest thing about an earthquake is the uncertainty. Once it starts, it seems like an eternity before you can be sure whether it is only going to be a minor quake or erupt into a major disaster.

Wow!! Speaking of earthquakes in NZ ...

I just found out that this week marks the 150th anniversary of NZ's strongest recorded earthquake. It measured 8.3 and was centered in Wellington. This was a major geological event that resulted in the biggest horizontal movement along a vertical fault line ever recorded. It even caused mountains to move. Human casualties and damage were low because Wellington had only a few thousand inhabitants then.

You just felt one :O. My god! ... You can almost sense all these little ones building up to a devastating one.

Considering if an earthquake the size of that which happened in Napier many moons ago, shook us today, we would be screwed. The whole country would feel it. ;/ That sort of thinking just scares the chickens out of me.

California is alot like Nz, the fault line runs straight through it.

Do you plan to be around when that event takes place? :D

Yes, Summer, i am scared to. The article you posted is quite interesting, yet it fails to say (me thinks) that it has been 40 years since an earthquake ever got that close to the surface. :S This is my understanding of it anywho. Gesus, any higher up and Upper Hutt would have been flattened.

The last earthquake we had was a few weeks back, but like a month ago there was an earthquake that measured 7.1 :O Off the west coast of the Sth Islnd. This is the report on it

"Minor damage at Invercargill and in the Southland-Otago area. Felt in much of the South Island and as far north as Hamilton on the North Island. " - :S that far up they felt it.

There hasn't been any earthquakes in london recently that I know of, so yeh I don't understand all the earthquake talk :D. Um.. once my (mad) primary school teacher told us to all jump around so that we'd make an earthquarke. :)
