Why does a rose represent love if a rose always dies?

That is a very interesting question...
    Well...
I think a rose represents infatuated love...
    Love at first sight,
Love that is electrifying and constantly new...
    Eventually, lusty love dies...
    So does a rose.

The color red, however, which also may represent love, lasts forever... as does real love, love that is unexplainable and has nothing to do with lust.

    That is my insight! <3

    This is what i think...

because just like everything else in life...it once holds beauty, life and hope....after a while the beauty starts to fade away, it begins to die and the hope to regain it all back is lost. Everything dies. To say that something will last forever is only a lie. Why become blind to the truth when we already know what will happen. That's exactly how love is

well it may seem a little negative...but thats my insight on it for now...i guess bcus my heart is a little broken :(

Ancient Greeks and Romans equated the rose with the goddesses of love.

I'm pretty sure that everyone is just reading way too far into things, to be honest. A rose is just the symbol for love. I don't know the history behind it, but I doubt it was intended as metaphorical as everyone see its.

In the 1700 the Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote love poems of enduring beauty, "My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose" was known widely at the time.

O, my luve's like a red, red rose
    That's newly sprung in June
O, my luve's like the melodie
    That's sweetly play'd in tune
As fair art thou, my bonie lass
So deep in luve am I
And I will luve thee still, my Dear
Till a' the seas gang dry
Till a' the seas gang dry, my Dear
And the rocks melt wi' the sun!
O I will luve thee still, my Dear
While the sands o' life shall run
And fare thee weel, my only Luve
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

Ever since I read that poem I associate it with the "rose" of today... Its all simply symbolic. My love is LIKE a rose, the beauty, the aroma, something seemingly perfect with its flaws. That lasts through the sands of time.

A enjoyed reading other's responses & agree to all, there are some really beautiful metaphors some of which I've heard & some that are new! Roses are a beautiful thing but it's thorns can hurt you, the littlest & simplest things can make it grow as well as wilt, they are finicky things that require commitment to tend to them, to witness their growth is beautiful, and when given a rose it's not the rose itself that's cherished it's the thought!

In my opinion, a rose is given as a symbol.
For instance, a rose's thorns can hurt you (as can love) but its beauty is so mesmorizing everyone would like to get it. (as everyone hopes to fall in love) i mean.. i would rather have a single rose, because it may be small but it means something.
Theres actually a saying, it goes, "A guy gave a girl a dozen real roses, and one fake one. He said, the day the last rose dies is the day i stop loving you." So i think that right there signifies if you put enough thought into it, the rose can signify a bond.. i think. Also, it could represent life. Like.. everything dies. Maybe it means that a rose may die, but while it was there, it meant something. It might just show nothing ever last forever.. but to marvel at its beauty while you have it. but this is all just my personal opinion. Also, i don't think anyone can ever truly know what its meaning is... other then that it warms our hearts when we receive one, what more is there to know..? :) hope i helped

I see a rose as a symbol of growing love. If you give/receive a bouquet there are flowers && buds. This small bud that is nothing within a few days blooms so full. Something so small becoming something so full && beautiful, just like a prospering relationship.
