    Although updating the notice is a good idea, it is not actually necessary. Literary works become automatically protected under copyright law as soon as they are put into a tangible form, which includes publishing on a web site.

    The Berne Convention of 1988 established an international agreement that copyright protection begins automatically when the work is first created. Notices are no longer required.

    A copyright generally lasts until 70 years after the death of the author.

    In present usage, copyright notices only serve the purpose of advising others to whom the ownership rights belong.
