Mi, u, ur, dat? um.. Learn to English?

Last I check this was a poems and quotes site. In real literature we don't spell my as mi, are as r, you as u, your as ur, that as dat,

thanks as thanx, seriously type it out right. show some real THANKS and actually take time to write it out.

One that really gets to me is love as luv, if you really "loved" someone. You wouldn't do some cheap writing as luv.

Does anyone else have this pet peeve? I know some of you will disagree and some will agree. But I'm just saying if your posting something you want help with, make it readable. Taking the time to read a post that has all this mi and u and r is pointless. Learn to spell and use correct literature and maybe you might get more feedback.

Does anyone else have any others that they would like to add in?

Note: I didn't start this thread for arguments or anything like that. I'm just curious as to what you think. I don't want it to turn out like the last thread, as Amanda posted.

Yes, this does happen to be one of my pet peeves! :) I really can't stand when people write, nevertheless talk, in slang or add extra letters to a word. I also can't stand someone who constantly curses, uses put downs and the like. I don't see the point to it at all and I'm not impressed. A lot of the time, like you said, it's unreadable. I like some of your examples; "luv" and "thanx", and agree that if you really LOVE someone and THANK someone be proper about it. It's purely just plain laziness and immaturity. I've heard people say that it, apparently, saves time. Saves time for what exactly? It's really sad to see the English language subjected to this.

I wonder, do they have slang and add extra letters to words in other languages too?

    "Learn to English?"
    "if your posting something?"
    "learn to use literature?"

    Generally I agree, but...

^Haha. I was thinking the same.. but I believe the first was a catchy title, the second was a mistake a lot of people don't realize they make, and the third.. well, it's just the wrong use of a word.. so I excused them.

However, wen ppl type lyk dis they r doin it on purpose.

We've really butchered the English language and it's quite sad.

You know what's quite sad? Today we got our mid-term marks in school. I am a grade 12 student and our class average for English was 70%. I live in Canada and in the region I live in English is the official language spoken, although we have French too. You'd be amazed at the amount of mistakes people who have been born in an English speaking nation make on a daily basis. It bothers me.

But obviously if you're not practicing it properly on a daily basis because you're doing a whole lot of this - u, luv, your (when you mean you're), i've even seen bai for bye - then you're not going to be getting very far. Many people say, "Well it's okay. I know how to spell it I just like to use the short form because it's faster." Well, no, it shouldn't work that way.
A lot of employers and even just people in general will first judge you on your communication and language skills. It's what makes a good or bad impression in an interview, audition, etc. So I think being able to write and speak well is a benefit for yourself. Plus it annoys me when I see other people do all that slang stuff.

I don't know about others but this is the way I see it.

I really think typing properly on the discussion board (with exceptions to the Friendship place) would be great.

It depends really on what you're writing, it buggs me when people spell everything write and then purposly put down one of the shortcuts. If you're writing something serious don't drag them in, if it's playfull and fun, something like chatting on msn, then that's fine. Still it depends on who it's adressed to, if it's someone who would understand it, and is ok with the situation then that's fine. other than that I don't think people should use them much.

The only time I see fit to use slang is when you're texting and you can only use minimal letters, or else you'd have to send two or three text messages, which I hate doing because usually they don't get the second half of the text and I have to type it again.

    Or dumb?

Like "soz" I hate that, hate that 'word' so much more than anything. You should only say sorry if you mean it, and SOZ is not meaningful damnit!

""wen ppl type lyk dis they r"

That is not English!! It is either "Lazyish" or "Idiotish""

^I know that, I was demonstrating.. nevermind. :/

    Ah, right..

I was being sarcastic when i typed out the title. I did that on purpose

And sure, I understand the texting thing because of the limit. but on other occasions i think its rediculous that people just can't spell it out.

It would take me more time trying to remember and actually write all this slang then to just type the real word.

I don't see the English language being overly embellished on this thread; just about every post has mistakes! So much for purists....including mine, yet if you visited the other thread you'd know my views...

Hopeless Romantic: In portuguese we do have slang, but, as far as I can remember, we do not use it in poetry... in german, i think there is as well, but I am not quite sure...
add extra letters?? not really... why should someone do it?

I'm not very fond of slang...
I think it doesn't sound very well...
And I mostly don't understand one single word of a slang poem...(alright, I am not a native speaker, but I have been learning English for about 7 years...)

I'm guilty of that! i used to do it all the time on here, till i learned my lesson. lol
actually sometimes i get extremely lazy and catch myself doing it.

it does annoy me though, when people write "yooh" or "yuh" instead of YOU. and when they add z's to everything. like, anywaysz, lolz, jusz, etc. its flippin' annoying.

the biggest annoyance is when they use numbers and symbols for letters.

    like: " H! muH NAM3 iSz P03t3SSz. h0oW ar3 Yh0o? "
    or somethinggg along those lines.

i've seen that in A LOTTT of profiles.

AND "should of, could of, would of" SHOULD be "should HAVE, could have, would have".

The problem is people like to write how they speak and sometimes that's not the right way. The way I see it is writing is more formal than speaking.

Honestly I beleive that I am one of the very few teenagers that actually spells words correctly none of this 'u' buisness. My bf used to write i love yew that annoyed me so much that eventually I got annoyed and told him that I did not feel special when he wrote it that way.
I admit I used to write like that saying ily and such but now I see whats the point if you type like that when it comes to writing in english or and exam and you type like that then wll you in for a big F.

Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine too. My friend always asks me why I take the time to spell everything out on messenger and my reply is it's a good habit. People who type wrong all the time might accidentally type that way on an English paper. It's just a bad habit. I told my friend that if the person on messenger wanted to talk to me then they can wait the extra 2 seconds for me to type.

However, just so no one thinks I'm a hypocrite (is that spelled right?) I will say that I use things like lol and j/k but other than that it's a little ridiculous.

(When I'm on messenger I am guilty of adding an occasional z to a word, though.)

Seriously though people. The worst kind of poetry is the kind with shortened words. The poetry loses all quality and few would want to read it.
