I have been writting poetry for a long time, and i started writting poetry when I was deeply depressed. Now two years later I am getting alot better..but the problem is when I try to write poetry it doesn't seem to be as near as good as the poetry I wrote when I was depressed. Is the common. Is it because I have lost the emotion I once had that would go into the poetry i once wrote. Has this ever happened to you. Any comment would be really nice because I love written poetry but the final results of my piece I am usually not satisfied. Please comment.

I know what you mean, Shannon. I would venture to say that most of the good and famous poets of history were depressive types. There is no doubt that depression breeds good poetry; however it is certainly not a requirement.

Try writing poems about sad topics anyway and just feel your way through them, read the poems that you wrote during that time and then get some of your emotion back, or just stop writing for a while until you can find something to write about that stems from a different emotion.

Practice makes perfect, and true talent doesnt come from depression, it comes from the art of lacing reality with words to tangibly convey something to your reader, of course this is most often an emotion, but it could be an idea or a perception of something.

Do this excersize, light a candle in a very dark room and watch it burn. Watch it for at least 10 minutes, but longer if you can. Think about how many different ways you can describe that candle and the act of the flame barreling down the wax, take a pencil and paper and just write about it, write what you observe, write how it represents life, convey its essence to the reader.

This is a great excersize, and what it will do for you is help you dig deeper into how many different ways you can look at the same thing and create different emotions out of something that is essentially emotion-less. It sounds silly, but this is one of the best things you can do. Try it.

I know what you mean. The reason is that when people are expressing a certain emotion, it is easy for them to write poetry because they are experiencing the emotion. When you are not experiencing the emotion or whatever your writing about, it is hard for a person to relate to the topic.

I agree with kaitlan, I myself bring potry from sorrow and suprisingly im able to write love poetry as well. I think in order to bring good poetry getting in touch with your emotions is a good way to produce good poetry. Most of my poetry is all depression and thoughts of death. I find it very good to write poetry that way. I guess i m just one of those morbid, death, obesessed freaks lol well good luck i hope my advice helped.

I used to write from my fellings too. But now that there gone i just listen to some song any song that makes me think of life in general and thats when I title comes to me. After the title i just sit and write about what comes under the title (don't worry about rhyming people over rate it). Thats how i write my poems hope that helps. See Ya!

oooooooh my god, ok honestly no offense, enough of the experts on this page. this is my advice to you. i think your too focused on " how good you were when you were depressed" and that's all your focusing on, and all you wrote were sad and depressing pieces. but just think now, write poems that have meaning...and that have love in them, and with the attitude you have now, which is a good attitude you can come up with good poems. just dont write about depresssing shit because obviously you cant because your not depressed
