well you dont want to go with whatever your friends think. but if YOU think that he'd be better as a friend then take him aside and talk to him about it. tell him that you really are flattered by the ring and everything but you love him too much as a friend to be anymore than that. he might take it hard, but it's best to tell him now rather than later.

Give the ring and rose back, kindly. Be honest, up front and warm. Nothing worse than thinking you're being lead along. An idea could be to give him a very unromantic gift in return to show how much he means to you as a FRIEND (emphasize the friend part yourself).

Tell him (with tact) exactly how you feel, sure he'll be mad and sore, but in a day or three he'll come round.
