My Great grandfather was in one of these. I'm wondering if anyone wants to talk about this subject

In the 1920-1930 an epidemic of TB was spreading all over the nation. Also known as the white death it effected the lungs. To stop it from spreading since there was no cure santariums were built to house infected people in hopes of curing them as well.

I think you are thinking about a sanatorium, those were the hospitals set up to deal with the TB outbreaks and other long term illnesses. Sanitariums are more like health and wellness resorts. It is a fairly minor distinction, but significant nonetheless.

Oh....no-one ever told me that. Thanks for the info. Someday I hope to do some urban exploring in the future in some of these places.

My sister does not live to far from the former Waverly Hills Sanatorium

That's awesome! Your sister is lucky but it must be hard to sleep at night knowing what happened there.

    Do you mean
    sanatorium
    /sanntorim/

    • noun (pl. sanatoriums or sanatoria /sanntori/) 1 an establishment for the care of convalescent or chronically ill people. 2 Brit. a place in a boarding school for children who are unwell.

As I can't find santarium even in the Oxford concise dictionary
