What is out there?

Do you believe there is another planet orbiting a star with the conditions and the building blocks for life?
What about the moon of another planet?

If so, do you think if there is life would it be human?

Keep in mind we share 90 some percent of the same DNA as a chimp and look how different we look. And there is life in the most extreme environments on earth.. Things to ponder.

I do think there is other life out there than just us. Out of the whole universe, we can't be the only planet to contain life. As for the species, I'm not entirely sure. I'd like to think that somewhere there is a backwards planet with the same people, but they're opposite. A pretty, less intelligent me; can you imagine? ;D

What kind of life though, do you think there are microbes, alien looking creatures, animals, or are you not sure but you just believe something is alive somewhere out there?

What do you think about all the money that is spent trying to listen to and receive radio waves from somewhere out there?

    ^ a less intelligent you LOL^

My personal belief is that there might be a place where it is just like it was a billion years ago for us, and there may be a place where it is a million years ahead of us. Not that they're exactly the same, but in the same stages of life and organisms.

If you accept that the universe is infinite, then that means there's an infinite amount of chances for things to happen, right? Well, if there's an infinite amount of chances for something to happen, then eventually it will happen - no matter how small the likelihood. That means, somewhere in space there's another planet that, by an incredible series of coincidences, developed exactly the same way as ours. Right down to the smallest detail.
And there's another which is exactly the same, except that palm tree over there is two feet to the right. And there's another where the tree is two feet to the left. In fact, there are planets with infinite amounts of variations on that tree alone, an infinite amount of times...

What book did I just quote? : )
Yes, there are things out there, much like us, just like us, and very unlike us, and things that are beyond what any of us could possibly imagine. I have no doubt in my mind.

I agree with Miss Take...some of the things only seen in comic strips years ago, are now a reality. I believe there very well could be....Maybe quite different than us but life just the same...I for one would love to meet them...new and exciting!

I was watching a program about our universe and they were pointing their radio telescopes at planets that orbit a similar distance from a star as we do the sun. The radio frequencies travel at the speed of light which still takes years to reach some of their objects of interest. Can you imagine having a conversation where you have to wait years for an answer?

Amazing and very interesting. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this!

I can understand the possibilities, however until we manage to advance our scientific technology we can only dream of what's out there...

And frankly we still haven't fully understood everything in our own back yard.... An example would that pluto isn't a planet anymore...

There's still so many things to discover, however nowadays it isn't such a glamorous or fulfilling thing to do... Which is sad in retrospect

I like to think there's cute little green people that live out there somewhere...haha

But seriously. This galaxy is HUGE! There's gotta be something out there besides us.

"If you accept that the universe is infinite"

its not, by rough estimates there are 10^24 stars in the universe. If .0000000000001% of those contain life, then there would still be a billion star systems that have life in them. I'd bet on those odds.

Do you think it is okay to spend money listening for some radio waves to confirm our suspicions or do you think more money should be spent instead investigating our own backyard like searching for Near Earth Asteroids and such?

If they found signs of life somewhere out there and it took years to get them a message, what do you think they would send?

What would you want to know?

If deep-fried icecream can exist, anything can exist.

Anything, of course, that can be detected, related and judged by Earthly human intelligence, which narrows anything down a little.

And if money is being poured into making deep-fried icecream, then money might as well be poured into finding life outside Earth. Both activities are indulgent, potentially self-destructive, and not necessary to human life, but by god the prospect is irresistable and insatiable.

But of course the actual amount of money spent on discovering how to make deep fried icecream.. would be much less than the money spent on searching for life on other planets. ..........

Rather than waste money on an uncertainty, it would be better to actually use it to find out more things about our surroundings...

If we think about sending radio waves to a possible advanced being, you can't predict that they'll somehow live in the same condition as ours, or arrive in the same linear pace as ours...

Our civilisations began steadily moving because our ancestors among others discovered fire... You can't say that they'll arrive through the same conclusion. Another thing to factor in is whether the theory of natural selection ever applies to... If we factor in whether their sun is similar to ours, how many moons their earth have etc... The possibilities are endless...

Its much more safer to clear our own back yard before we invite vistors to a barbecue...Lol

I'm tired of our backyard.. Seriously, who cares if Pluto is a planet or not? It's still Pluto and it's still in the same freakin' place.. same size. We just know it's not a planet now. Psssssssssh
    Whatever
I'd much prefer spending money trying to find other life. Not even money. Why does everything cost money........ argh. I'd just much rather that we use our resources and technology to look for some crazy shi.. p way the fu... n out there. Yeah. Why not.

Ah, but Jane, deep-dried icecream represents so much more than just deep-fried icecream. It represents human greed in general, and a lot of money/time/effort/general consciousness is spent on that. We have evolved to do a lot more than merely survive. We have evolved to invent genius ways of fattening cold fat with hard fat. And we are not just greedy for food and money and highlighting our existence- we are greedy for further knowledge...to the point of self-destruction. It is amazing, as finite and boundless as the universe and our imagination. And I would prize that over deep-fired icecream any day.

    Ha, we posted simultaneously.

Anyway, about what I would message the aliens...hmmm...maybe some music? Some beautiful waves.

As for the aliens...they might have already been and gone. They probably tried to communicate with the ants as leaders of Earth, according to dominant population.

  • silvershoes

Yep. Probably talked to the ants. I swear ants are *actually* the dominant species on Earth. C'mon.

I would send a message to the aliens something like this:

    Dear freaks,
We have been watching you this whole time. We have the technology to bomb your asses to grass, but you don't even know what grass is - HA! Anyway, what up? Learn to speak English. Write back asap.
    Love, Earth
P.S. JK about the bombing. We come in peace.

I believe a lack of intelligent life out there would be impossible. The universe is constantly expanding at a ridiculous rate. How can anyone acknowledge infinity and think otherwise?

  • silvershoes

Or you could be like Johnny boy and not acknowledge infinity.
