What Has The World Come To?

After five months of searching, I finally found a (somewhat) stable job working at a fast food restaurant here in town. Unfortunately, that's all the jobs that are really available considering the unemployment rate and the problem with the economy.

I went into work Saturday night, and we were packed. I didn't have time to think. I had my back turned on my cash register while I was preparing the trays to go out to the customers. When I turned back around, my fellow cashier was standing at my drawer taking money out of it. I asked her what she was doing, and she stated that the manager had told her to trade me a $10 bill for some $1 bills. I didn't think anything odd of it, but I did ask her to let me know when she was going into my drawer from then on.

Later that night, when my drawer was counted, it came up $60 short. I have worked cashier for a little over a year and have never come up more than $2 short. I was immediately suspicious. My manager told me that she'd try to make sure I wasn't fired, but it didn't look good. She also told me that the drawer beside mine was $15 short when it hadn't even been in use.

Aside from that, the cashier who was in my drawer had come up $20 short the first night she worked. When she got wrote up, she was never short again, but others she worked with had started coming up short. People who had never been short.

Tonight I went into work and I was told by my shift manager that I had to be let go because of the amount of money that was missing from my drawer. She said that it was orders directly from the District Manager.

I'm not sure what I can do here. This is the only job that was available, and now I've lost it due to a thief at work that no one has any proof on. Anyone have any advice for this?

Wow...that is tough....and very upsetting. It's a sad thing when good things happen to bad people.....the world has become a twisted and horrible place....it's just the truth....hang in there....and dont give...things will eventually get better for you....just hang in there sorry to hear that....hopefully the thief will be caught....good luck and stay strong....

That's been happening at my friend's job too, and just recently they put cameras up and put some thing on the cash registers so that anyone who uses it has to punch in their own code so the manager would know who had been on that register if money was ever missing. I really don't understand why you don't have cameras installed in your place of work at this time, as cameras will catch any and everything done. I'm really sorry about what has happened, I'm not sure there is anything you can do, other than to try and talk to them and explain your side of the story, but even then I'm not sure that would do any good, as they have already let you go. It is a sad, sad world we live in..

Sadly there is probably nothing you can do now, but it is a lesson for the future, never let anyone on your till and if you see someone in it, speak to your manager immediately. No one gets in my till without me standing there or a manager and thankfully we have cameras which catch most things.
