Yes, I did just create a second one of these... only so I could respond to this (from Bob):

"Ok I have waited long enough to ask a serious question, and by the way, thanks to all of you for coming out of hiding and excellerating the board participation, you truly have saved P and Q....ok, well made it interesting anyways. My question is this and please don't think I'm asking this to create an argument or dissention, I'm as usual just curious and would like to hear the true answer from all those names you listed in the initial post....

"do you as individuals and as the club think you are better than the rest of the members on this site, either intellectually or status wise. I ask this for two reasons, because while I appreciate that some of you are really intent on "keeping the spirit of P and Q alive" others of you seem to do so with such an arrogant tone that it makes me wonder if you collectively think you are the chosen few so to speak. What would I even base such an assumption on, one only needs to read all the posts to understand......as I said, an honest answer would be refreshing, so give it up....."

We're the medium. The most intelligent members on the site avoid the forums completely. For those that do participate, we're on the higher end of the spectrum (though not highest)... There are 10 or so other forum posters - outside our club - that seem intelligent... as well as a few mods ;)

Bit off topic but, I have never felt arrogance is something to respect. Maybe something to laugh about, to raise an eyebrow at amusedly, but not something to respect. Humbleness is respectable, and that's something our club lacks. Yes, I did just insult myself and my own club, haha!
I reckon there are heaps of geniuses lurking this site unseen, unheard in their humbleness, or boisterous in another club's domain.

Still, our club is the best. Sib explained it. We're colorful, contrasting, and ... charismatic. Yeah. Other stuff too.

Haha, of course. If you liked us, we'd get bored and start wreaking havoc, don'tcha know eh?

  • Jordan

We don't like you, either, Pumpkin. :D

It's been so long since I've participated in the main forums and seriously, after that BIG question, I'm feeling a lot more refreshed, too.

    My favorite song is
Oh Lord It's Hard to be Humble by Mac Davis, but you know that most people like to laugh with him when he sings that song

I believe you remember a time when this whole site seemed like one big happy family

Somehow in the club we manage to keep our competative spirit without losing our team spirit

I see no harm in placing poetry in a sacred catagory that seems at times unreachable

I do believe every active member of "The Club" deserves an E for effort and hope that they are as able to find strength in humility as our fearless leader
It is also my hope that the other members and mods will continue to laugh with us.

Before my section of poetry and profile was modified I only had a 4.7 rating with 492 poems

Now it reads that I have 3 poems with a 4.8 rating

I don't believe everthing I read about myself

Our club is called THE CLUB. I think that is a fair indication of how we like to project ourselves, at least on this site. Regardless of whether our arrogance is real or a facade, it is usually true that a thing said in jest is a thing half confessed.

We have fun being cocky, though this always runs the risk of distancing us from various truths.

It is also interesting to note that while arrogance is often a product of ignorance, impassioned intelligence is often mistaken for arrogance by the ignorant.

  • Nicko

I'm at the lower echelon of intelligence within The Club, Sibs probably paraphrased me correctly with her category "old farts". Our ego's are large and we are some of the most active members on this site we are loud and as Abby said cocky, (by the way great post) which can intimidate especially some of the younger members, but we are all very different individuals and don't always agree, hell if we meet up we may not even like each other, who knows?

I think The Club has been intent on "keeping the spirit of P & Q alive", that was always my objective, how we set out to achieve that brought us into conflict with you and the other Mods, we challenged your authority and the rules we operate under, you may have perceived that as a direct criticism and a failing in the way you moderated this site and reacted accordingly, you know better the answer to that, things progressed from there....nough said

  • silvershoes

Right, we're not arrogant. The correct term is "impassioned intelligence" ;) I like it.

True Nicko, in person we might not like each other. A sad thought, and I have trouble believing it, but only one way to find out!

    Haha... ha. Gulp.

Animosity's a pretty big thing here. I'm usually pleasantly surprised when I see a discussion that doesn't end up in personal attacks.

Personal agenda? I just come here to see what people have to say, and to have a nice visit with my good friends in THE CLUB. We are pretty tightly knit. I think that is what's good about this site as a social network, though. There is a noticeably fine line between clubs and the main forums, making the clubs feel a bit more personal. Like a little online home.

"4. reverts back to the initial statement, we don't challenge each other enough, and even if we do the participation level sucks....."

That is very true. By the way, is it against the most recent site rules to hold a challenge and post poetry within the main member forum? Or is that a special exception?

  • Kevin

Yeah I agree with you Bob. I can see us all at a beer heavy folk night of poetry and music just kicking it up, laughing at JustplainMe and all the silly arguments that encompass our histroy.

Won't happen most likely though so we're left with the perfectly imperfect text communication, repleet with it's mass misunderstandings and totally bereft of emotion and body language.

I saw a short film last week about a guy in oxford who is trying perfect a machine that automatically changes the colour and size of text on a computer based on how you feel when you write it. It's all in the early stages right now but imagine not being able to pretend you are joking when you respond to someone who's pissed you off?

    HAVE A NICE DAY BOB!!....

There is not a "more" at the bottom of my recent poems

Bob, Over time a couple of members have pm'd on my posts in the Members forum, they considered them overly aggressive. I responded with my reasons with reference to the posts I was responding to, they then understood the tone and meaning of my posts. We are probably all guilty of this at times, me included, tone intonation and meaning is only truly known by the poste, for example your interpretation of my last post. "I totally disagree with Nicko's statement, I believe that many of us would absolutely adore each other if we met in person". A) It was in reference to those within The Club perceived by some as a totally united front intent on challenging mod authority. We aren't! we want the site to flourish not die. B) Have you ever spoken with somebody on the phone day in day out. You build a mental picture of what that person is like when you meet they are seldom as you perceived them to be. C) It wasn't a statement more an observation of possibility. We all get on well in our club and you would hope the same if we meet in person, I would like nothing more than to meet up and all get on, have a beer or three and cement the foundations of friendship. I'm an optimist but life isn't a fairytale.

I set out to have fun, challenge myself collectively and write a bit of poetry in between in short a distraction from everyday life.

The last full book that I read and really enjoyed was Stephen King's Song of Susannah. Part 6 of 7 in the Dark Tower series.

I would recommend those books for sure, or at least I'd recommend up until the 4th and then caution you to expect the series to sort of fall apart after that.

The 4th is the best by far, but they're all pretty good. (Provided you like Stephen King, that is. Hah.)

The Beach was a great read (by Alex Garland). The movie sucks, especially after reading the book, but the book... is awesome. I got drawn in immediately.
I picked up some Jack London books, oldschool, but the guy could write a mean book or two, no jokes. White Fang and Call of the Wild, both quick reads, but great, especially if you like animals.
The Other Boleyn Girl turned out to be an amazing read. Highly recommended. I was so sad to finish it. It's nothing like the movie... which is absolute crap in comparison.
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is quite a cool book. It's inspiring and if you love wild true stories... well this is one.
White Oleander by Janet Fitch is an interesting book. It's kind of a downer, but it's good. The movie is quite good too since it doesn't stray from the book's storyline though it does cut lots of good stuff out.
Girl, Interrupted, an autobiography by Susanna Kaysen, is hardly interesting at all. It's much too quick a read and hardly brushes the surface of giving characters individual personalities. Funny thing is... the movie is in my top 5.
A Child Called It, an autobiography by Dave Pelzer, is a quick read, not extremely well written, but it's powerful and will stick with you forever.
The God of Animals by Aryn Kyle is a unique book because it is simple but dramatic. It could be the story of anyone's life. Soooo well-written and very human.
Girl With a Pearl Earring wasn't anything special to read, but I think about it fairly often, so it must've been special! It's slow and doesn't really go anywhere, but it's realistic in that light.
I've read a few other things in the past month too, but that's enough.

Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre is an ace book about a highly sensitive boy who survives a high school shooting his friend enacts..and..everything goes nuts around him. Like a modern catcher in the rye, only better.

I'll second Jordans "Dark Tower" series by mr King, top class, even if the ending is total mince!

This question is for all club members. :)

This friday my class is having a little party called Polk-A-Palooza. It's basically about how awesome James K. Polk (the eleventh president of the United States) was. We're allowed to bring in any food we want, as long as it ties in with JKP. For example, someone is bringing in Coca-Cola and renaming it Polka-Cola. Get it? Well, I need some creative ideas on what I can bring, and since the people in this club are some of the most creative EVER!!! (winkwink) I was wondering if you could help. Any ideas?

There are several recipes for polk salad, but since poke weed may be out of season substitute spinich in scabbled eggs

    "Poke Salad Annie"
    Song
"Poke Salad Annie" or "Polk Salad Annie" is a 1969 song written and performed by Tony Joe White. It was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Its lyrics describe the lifestyle of a generic Southern girl. Traditionally, the term to describe the type of food highlighted in the song is "poke salad." Its 1969 single release peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Don't forget the artichoke Polk dip for the horny Polks

What musicality meant to say was that she is only blonde when talking to people who act and talk like they are as stupid as a blonde. She has a wig for occasions when she doesn't want to be smart, like at parties with geeks like you are all not, as I'm not bothered isn't it.

I use the same tactic, except I speak with a Scottish accent and everyone assumes I'm a savage who knows nothing of love, or culture or mansex.

This question is to everyone who wishes to answer.

What is life to you? Based on your beliefs on life, are you living, or merely existing?

  • Michael D Nalley

Years ago a man was training me for a job and he told me "I used to do this for a living, but now I just do it to keep from starving to death. It is when we either lose interest or feel helpless that seem to be the darkest hours.

I feel more alive when I leave my comfort zone of mere existence

  • sibyllene

I think there are two modes of living: one is being swept along in the moments, experiencing, feeling, touching. Not thinking, but being. Then there are the times when the rush and flow of living seem to grind to a halt, because you're suddenly stopping to think of the absurdity and miracle of your own existence. It's a reflective state - one that can be frightening. I think people need both, in some measure, in order to get everything they can out of life, and appreciate all its strangeness and magnitude.

"the purpose of life is to live and to live is to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenly, divinely aware."
    -Henry Miller

Life is a question... The answer is: Life isn't a question.
It's not a question, it's an unavoidable fact (unless you're dead).

    I like Sibby's response, I'm seconding it.

Now as to the meaning of life, if there has to be a meaning, I'd say it's finding peace within oneself. Contentedness.
It seems like all of life is a struggle; an endeavor towards an ultimate goal... so yeah. I guess the end product is "inner peace," which most of us never get to. Death will kill you before you find your peace or you'll find your peace and there's nothing left to do but die :\ Unless you're one of the few who can live comfortably and happily without meaning. And if you fit into that category, I think you have a very fundamental gift that most people deprive themselves of.
As to finding peace, I'm of the belief that peace will only come when you stop searching for it.

    Wow, I'm morbid.
P.S. I hate "what is life?" questions. I think they're stupid. No offense.
It was Krishnamurti who said, "What is life? It is something new all the time."
By asking the question or presuming unattainable qualification by answering it, you're cementing life... You're backtracking on the truth, conforming to an immobile perception. It's a contradiction. Life is decidedly mobile. It's un-cement-able. It's an infinitely changing fact. It's then and now and soon and in a long time. It's the beginning, the middle, and it's right up until the very end.

Who said life is dull? If you're talking to me you completely missed my very singular, simple point. How annoying. But I did expect that. If anyone understand my point to its fullness, I'd say we're kindred souls :)
