Version 2.0 of "Damn Cutters"

Well, to those of you joining me after the second deletion of my thread, I think we might want to switch to a different approach. One with less cussing and hatred. Sorry to those I offended, I will not withdraw my opinions, but I will my crude remarks. Obviously, the conversation lacked intelligence as I left little room for it in the begining. But serriously folks, let's talk. Here, a question:

Are cutting, self-harm, burning, and self-deprevation fads?

    (Please, invoke reason. Think Plato.)

    PostScript-Moderators:
I understand my past two threads were in violation of forum rules. Please refrain from deleting this one. Though this may be a touchy subject, I belive it is time for an in-depth discusion on it, especially with its promenance on this website.

I blame a lack of faith and apathy for life. 'Cutting' for many is a fad I am sure. For those where it is a genuine problem i'll call it self-harm.

Cutting is a fad in that instead of dealing with a problem it is put aside, forgotten with a slice here, a cut there until it grows boring and the next way of not dealing with the issue comes up. I'll put my mortgate on this that 50% of 'cutters' (as that is the name for the culture*) will go onto do hard drugs, become alcoholics and genreally blame everything else except the problem that made them cut inthe first place.

*I say culture because regardless of how you look at it cutting is retro-cool, ante-fab, the in thing for the out crowd to do.

Self harm is an entirely different ball game.

    Bert

Sometimes its fad and thats sik. I used to self harm on occasion but only when the need to was really strong, and that started when i was 10 long before i knew it existed, and I've done it about 5 times, last time was about 3-4 weeks ago. And suddenly everyone is doing it everyday and its disgusting. Though i'm sure everyone who does it everyday needs help, i'm not saying they don't, i just think its something ppl might do a few times in their life when the going gets the toughest and only then.

Suicide, I don't mind. BUT it must be in good taste. For the Japenese, it was a cultural stable, and accpetable, as their society had become well acustomed to it. I support Death With Dignity, and we got it, here in Oregon. If you are truly better off dead, then I believe you should have a choice. BUT: suicidal teens, wait it out. You've only lived 15 years; there's time enough for things to change.

    I guess I should explain why I think it's a fad...

There are so many countless ways to cope with life. Since the day Princess Diana came out on tv and said she self harmed it has become a highly publicised and popular way of coping. This is where the fad was born. (Hell, you can even see films about it now.)

The fad of cutting belongs to those who actively or sub-conciously thought "Hey, nothing else I've tried so far helps, it works for Bert so I think I'll try cutting." That's the media induced culture called trend.

For those who in their initial experiece woke from a trance with a knife, blade or whatever in their hand wondering what the hell just happened but feeling a little better/less depressed for it... that's self harm in the making.

I agree that this is a subject worth discussing BUT we will never actually get anywhere with this discussion so is there really a point in opening the discussion again - it differs to each and every individual and we have pretty much covered every aspect possible on each side of the argument...

i have to agree, i have heard of many... how shall i put it... gothlings cut because they think it is cool and because they think its something they must do to look all depressive and real, when them faking and not being themselves totally pushes them away from what they are trying to achieve, they don’t cut themselves to pull themselves out of numbness of pain but i must admit thought i have problems i don’t let them rule my life and sometimes i do have a happy day other times i don’t... i dont like it when people to do it for the sake of it, though what can we do? complaining gets us nowhere it just causes arguments... but also think about it, this is only a fraction of youth and also sometimes its to fit in, I’ve been thinking about that and a reason who a mate of mine let her old school because of a problem like this, they forced her to do it so she could join their gang... pathetic really, but you have to consider all sides to get to a reasonable answer, nothing is simple and can be answered with a easy yes or no...

People who cut as a fad and to feel cool make me sick. I can understand it when someone does it because they need to do it to feel better, but doing it as a fad? That's worse than the serious ones, because they'll slowly turn it into a competion of who can make the deepest and the most. It's sick.

And what is with emo kids? oooh you're EMO. OH GOD NO. It's MUSIC. not PEOPLE. sheesh.

    sorry, this bothers me.

  • Just Sierra

Emo, may be used as a sort of abbreviation for emotional. So, really, you're both right. A kid can be emotional, and music can be emotional. It depends on how you view it, but either way, emo is emotional. Just saying.

Goth, emo, indie, hippe, jock, prep, nerd, geek, sk8ers and all the rest... all meaningless labels.

Don't restrict yourself to one style of music or dress sense. Try everything at least once. Be yourself, it's much more fun.
