A soulmate or soul mate is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, love, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, and/or compatibility. A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul which is thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join. However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations.

    Mythology
One story about soulmates, presented by Aristophanes in Plato's Symposium, is that humans originally consisted of four arms, four legs, and a single head made of two faces, but Zeus feared their power and split them all in half, condemning them to spend their lives searching for the other half to complete them.

[Primeval man] could walk upright as men now do, backwards or forwards as he pleased, and he could also roll over and over at a great pace, turning on his four hands and four feet, eight in all, like tumblers going over and over with their legs in the air; this was when he wanted to run fast. Terrible was their might and strength, and the thoughts of their hearts were great, and they made an attack upon the gods ... Doubt reigned in the celestial councils. Should they kill them and annihilate the race with thunderbolts, as they had done the giants, then there would be an end of the sacrifices and worship which men offered to them; but, on the other hand, the gods could not suffer their insolence to be unrestrained. At last, after a good deal of reflection, Zeus discovered a way. He said: 'I have a plan which will humble their pride and improve their manners; men shall continue to exist, but I will cut them in two and then they will be diminished in strength and increased in numbers; this will have the advantage of making them more profitable to us. They shall walk upright on two legs, and if they continue insolent and will not be quiet, I will split them again and they shall hop about on a single leg.
    Aristophanes, Plato's Symposium,

According to Theosophy, whose claims were modified by Edgar Cayce, God created androgynous souls, equally male and female. Later theories postulate that the souls split into separate genders, perhaps because they incurred karma while playing around on the Earth, or "separation from God". Over a number of reincarnations, each half seeks the other. When all karmic debt is purged, the two will fuse back together and return to the ultimate.

    No, they don't.

Personalities mix well, sexual attraction helps, social circumstances bring people together. It's not destiny or fate, but it can still be magical as a feeling..the best feeling in the world to have that instant harmony with someone else.

Don't get carried away into fairy land.

Ha! So now that I have found my soulmate, we together form a big, fleshy, spider to be reckoned with, somersaulting through life! I like that. The gods are vain.

There is also a belief in Hinduism that people marry the same partner in each incarnation, finding each other through every lifetime.

While my thoughts on soulmates correlate with Kevin's, I like sprinkling these romantic bits of fairy land over something as brave and ideal and nonsensical as love.

It seems like that someone who would pull the wings off of fairies or discourage a trip to never never land is cruel but I would suspect that they have been there and are trying to protect other fools from mischievous winged creatures.

I have empathy for the thunderstruck, yet will not hesitate to use the term Pseudo-relationship because commitments are only fruitful when they revolve around true love

Though it would be tempting to create a soulmate while pretending to have a solemate, who directs the course of love?

Yes, they do. I found mine a few years ago. He is my "twin"in all possible ways and it is scary at times to see how much we have in common, even our children resemble each other and us. (he is not my husband, but my best friend)

Yes I believe in soul mates.

Though I do believe a soul mate can be either female or male. Someone we create a deep bond with but doesn't have to be sexual. It can be a best friend of the same sex ect ..

Now Twin soul is a totally different thing I believe.

One of my soul mates and Bro - Bill once explained a lot of this to me.

It's a bunch of stuff with pods and peas ... lol
I won't get in to it all ... but a twin soul is just 1
Soul mates you can have many.

I believe in soul mates, but I think we all have a big pool of potential soul mates to pull from. There are different kinds of people that can compliment your puzzle piece, especially since we're constantly changing form. I met one soul mate already but I screwed things up after 3 years. I think I have another soul mate somewhere on the wings, waiting to be discovered. Maybe he's been discovered but one of us hasn't realized it.

Normally I'm a skeptic (Really I am, Kevin!), but then I look at my fellow. I've known him well for a decade. We should probably get married. Even if we don't, I think he's gonna be my standard for the long run. I think you can jive with lots of people, and deeply love plenty, but I think if I was with anyone else instead of him, he'd always be catching glances out of the corner of my (mind's) eye. But maybe being in love - a ridiculous thing - makes you believe in all sorts of other ridiculous things, like soulmates, God, and fate.
