Word of the Day - gloaming

Gloaming - noun, meaning twilight, or dusk.

"from glom "twilight," related to glowan "to glow" (hence "glow of sunrise or sunset")* I would be more inclined to try to use it as a descriptor, like "the gloaming of twilight," but that would be like saying "the twilight of twilight."

A More Proper Example: In the gloaming, I went inside to light some candles and choose a heavy book from the shelf.

I'm a fan of this word because it's so odd. "Gloaming" has such a heavy, gloomy sound to it, that seems strange to pair with the fiery brightness of dawn or dusk. I guess it makes more sense in the context of "glowing," but still. To me, "gloam" has always had a bit of a muddy, brooding feel. I like it, but it's unexpected.

Out of curiosity, I just looked up the word "gloom" to see if that was related to "gloam." Apparently, the two are thought to be unrelated.

In the gloaming a strange shadow was roaming, it was the one-eyed ghost, the creature I feared most:)

Ingrid, your "one-eyed" description makes me think of other things....

Yeah, I think "gloaming" is supposed to be an alternative to twilight. It sounds kind of dusky and ominous.

Seriously, gloaming isn't a verb? Crap, I always thought it was.

    In the gloaming,
    he was found roaming
    along the rivers of Wyoming,
at the banks where it was foaming.

I bet, poetically, you could use it as a verb ala "twilighting" or something.

It's a very Poe sort of word. I love it.

    From Dusk to Dawn

May the fields get a combing
In the hours of days gloaming
If we miss fruit in our haste
It must not be lain to waste
If they're planted in the earth
    Seeds of life await rebirth

I don't think i've ever used this word in a sentence before. Twilight yes, gloaming no. It's such a heavy word, I love the sound of it however.

I was thinking the other day of words that I like the sound of, I'm adding this to my list along with harlot lol!
