What's your contribution to our society?

I would like to know what your goals are, what do you plan on doing with your life? In what ways are you planning on contributing to our society in a meaningful way? Maybe you already are, if so, are you willing to share it with the members?

I will start off with mine: I have a practice and I help others lose excess weight and change their daily routine around with exercises etc. I have made this my primary goal, because obesity is costing governments millions each year and many people die long before their time is due from horrible obesity- related diseases. I hope to reach as many as I can in my lifetime and help them achieve what I have achieved myself: lose their excess weight for good.

    You are welcome, Britt:)

I don't think you do little, the things you mentioned may inspire others reading it to do the same.

Things we do for others without payment are worth twice as much, because we do it out of love for our fellow men.

As a teenager I was involved with Foster Parents Plan. We had adopted a child in Africa and we all contributed from our allowance. I didn't have much money, but I didn't mind giving some to someone who was worse off than me! Later on I heard there was something fishy about Foster Parents Plan, corruption, or something like that. I despise those who steal from money meant for the poorest people on this earth:(

Don't undermine your contributions Britt, it's the little things that go a long way. And as Ingrid said can inspire others to do the same, which to me is most important. Compared to one person doing something big, I think it's the many people doing little things that have the biggest impact. If that makes sense. :)

For Valentine's two years ago, I was in a theatrical production in which our group volunteered to perform for The Prairie Women on Snowmobiles; a group snowmobiling across the country to raise money for breast cancer research, raise awareness and find a cure. We sold tickets for the event donated them to the cause. Over 300 people attended and, since The Prairie Women on Snowmobiles has been ongoing since 2002, we helped to raise over 1 million dollars for breast cancer. I enjoyed performing and contributing.

In my hometown we hold Soup and Sandwhich's or Suppers at the community hall to help raise money for the community (parks, school, local business, etc.) as well as for citizens in the community who are in need. Such as families whose homes have burned down and families who have to drive to/stay in the city while a family member/they undergo chemotherapy or other treatment. When I am able, I try to donate my time and assistance some how in the dinner/supper or purchase a ticket. Community is very important to me.

Last year I sorted through my clothes, what I didn't wear or fit me anymore, and gave them away to a local family who couldn't afford Christmas presents for their three children. Every few years or so I do this.

I volunteered while I was in university at an animal shelter. I would like to someday foster as well as adopt. I just love animals.

I would love to someday adopt a child. I feel like sometimes adoption, for couples who are having trouble conceiving or other reasons, is a last option. Yes, I would like to have a child(ren) of my own, however, I don't believe that they have to be blood related in order for me to call them my own. Whether my fiance and I have trouble conceiving, are unable to have children or are fully capable, adoption is something for us to consider in the future.

I hope to soon return to university to study under fitness and nutrition. It not only is a passion of mine but a way of life. I am quite the social person and enjoy helping others (be it with advise or my physical assistance). What better career could I ask for than to do what I love doing: being active, healthy and helping others. :)

Interesting thread, Ingrid. and, of course, I get to brag! xD

Goals: The UN and ICJ all the way. (ICJ: international court of justice).

I'll be graduating from law school in a few months and plan to specialize in international law, the ministry of foreign affairs isn't bad either, I'm considering it as a start, but my ultimate dream and goal is the ICJ, Hague or not.

I would love to work on the Palestinian conflict, I actually envied Richard Goldstone till I turned green when he got that chance, yet I halfway fell in love with the man while reading his report on the Gaza Conflict. His report, and those who read it know, is one of a kind. just unbelievable. so sad it's placed in dusty drawers now.

when it comes to my contributions to society as in charity and voluntarily work, those are something I do for my country, people and god, not for any recognition, hence I won't list them, it becomes meaningless, to me at least.

Ever since I was bitten by a radioactive spider, I've prevented crimewaves in New York city and saved damsels in distress from murderers and thieves. My titanium strength solution of web has been proven to stop enemies in their tracks, and aid the police's efforts to keep the city a safe place.

Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin has been a constant nemesis but I've thwarted his plans on his Goblin Glider for years to come. I'm a role model for children and people worldwide who want a make a difference to the world, regardless of their powers. Since we all have the power to make the world a better place.

It's a difficult job, being the city's waste disposal. I have given up a normal romantic life with my teenage sweetheart, Mary Jane and it's difficult with a conglomerate amount of enemies wanting my head on a platter, but all selfless things come with huge sacrifices.

Danny, I admire your sacrifices and noble role of putting other people before your selfless self and saving the day.

what in the world would we do without you?

My brother for one would be most displeased and heartbroken, he has your posters all over his room. xD

I thought we swore an oath when we met that you would not reveal my real name to the public...

Though I am flattered that your brother documents my existence in poster form on his room. Though there are a lot of dartboards with my face on that people use to practice on. The love and hate from the public fuels my need to fight crime. It's difficult protecting those who find your existence unnecessary...

Jane, you will forever be Bones in my book.

I feel like the things I've done have been small and isolated, so I'm not sure if I can count them as great world changing acts of kindness. Mostly just volunteering. I spent a week in Guatemala finishing a greenhouse at a school for children with disabilities, and a month in Russia at an orphanage playing with, chasing, and pulling flowers and sand out of the mouths of seven toddlers with down's and fas.
I once helped write christmas cards to soldiers overseas, and I painted the cabinets for a science classroom. I'm not sure that my future is full of crime-fighting (I'm not as ambitious as miss silverslippers or Spiderprince). Actually, my desired future sounds pretty selfish. I want travel, travel, travel, and a nice house and lots of fun. I know that I want to adopt. There are way too many kids out there without families to consider bringing more babies into the world, and I think one of the best things about working at an orphanage is the bittersweet moment when one of the kids you've been looking after ups and disappears forever with a new family. I'd really like to go to all the really impoverished places in the world. I'm not sure what I could do, but I have this overwhelming need to be there.
This is a really neat thread. Bragging rights aside, it's quite a wake up call. There are so many things to do out there. Volunteering at a shelter... I might try that next.

    Impressive post.

''I plan to get a masters in Criminal Psychology and join the FBI as a profiler. I'm gonna hunt killers.''

Criminology is also very interesting, Jane. (I think you'll be needing it as well?) It was my first pick for masters and a PH D should you have asked me a year or two ago, but then I.. had a change of heart, I guess. anyway, wish you luck.

It is nice to see how different people are. I think all contributions matter, especially those that cannot be payed for. In my country people are less and less involved in charity, because of the financial crisis and the government is cutting down on the budget for the disabled(children) and also on culture. With no sponsoring from the government lots of vulnerable groups in our society will have a hard time coping, unless people will donate/ volunteer to help out in their spare time.

I think it's great you all are showing what it is that makes you tick, it will inspire other members to do the same!

"I would like to know what your goals are, what do you plan on doing with your life? For these questions I'll answer them another time.

I cannot go bragging that i have done much, because i have never done any volunteery work. Neither have i envolved or contribute in any form of associations to help others. If i should search for a reason, i'd say it's because i don't have the time. I don't know if that count but often times when i go shopping if i saw any form of collect for charities i will donate whatever i can. Also in my neighborhood there were a hugh collect for haiti and i participate in whatever way i could and even more, through in my mind i'm still wondering if the people of haiti really benefits from what the world has contributes to them because of the situation that i've seen the country in on the television. I am not a mean person but i cannot say i have done lots to help others. Oh i forget, each year i like changing things in my home, so i would go post a add to see if anyone is of interest, apart from this i can't think of anything, being for me what i've done is so 'little', i have never take into account what i've done for others. That is who i am, but i'm sure i have done many thing without even thinking.

"These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty.
There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward.
And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism.
    And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue;
They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space.
Though the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth." Gibran

I noticed that in the poems about life section in spite of many efforts it reads There are no poems. Since most of us will never be nominated for a Nobel Peace prize . I want to share the joy I felt last week when I visited an old friend at a nursing home. I took her a heart shaped box of chocolates . This was before valentines day. I received word yesterday that this Alzheimer Angel had passed on to her eternal reward. She left me with a gift that in spite of her affliction she still remembered me

I've never killed a man, or a woman. I recycle and move things off paths. I smile at old ladies. Even if I'm not in a good mood, I don't walk around with a face like mince, cause that can bring people down.

I also invented water, though I forget how because before I invented it, I was rather parched.

I work with adults who have various forms of Autism, probably my most regular daily contribution...aside from being beautiful...: )

Yes I do watch Criminal Minds and no I did not decide profiling is my calling after watching the show :) Wanting to be a profiler/criminal psychologist came first! Someone else asked me the other day if I want to be the next Emily Prentiss, Danny. Funny.

I'm not entirely sure what field I want to get into, but profiling is the direction I'm currently headed in. Also interested in forensics...

Anyway, I can't say I contribute much to society but I do believe in having a career that is pro-life and pro-earth.

Oh thanks Ingrid, it's not often I look good in a picture!

You look lovely, I get the strong impression when you laugh, everyone laughs...I'd love to know the story of that picture of yours.

  • Ingrid

    Lol, well you really do:)

The picture was taken by my son, a few years ago at Christmas. We were having so much fun. Now, three years later, he is hardly ever home anymore due to his busy life at uni and his side job. I am so glad I had the chance to spend so much time with him as a child.

I am indeed a very cheerful person, I have this quote and will try to translate: a day not spent laughing is a wasted day.

Its been a long time since my appearance, but its nice to see a few crabby avatars once in a while...Lol.

As for my contribution to society...Not killing wastes of space and those who whine "me me me" is definitely a start...Lol.

But really every week I go to a local day center and help serve food to the homeless, after that, I listen and speak with them, hopefully from our conversations I would find a way I could help them.

Like for example yesterday, I saw a man actually sleeping in the sitting position on the sidewalk, and this was actually 2 in the morning. Normally like the rest of the world I would ignore this man, but thankfully I didn't. I asked him if he was ok, and asked him if he would like something to eat, seeing as I was going to the 24 hour gas station. He said that all he ever needs is the alcohol he stores in his pocket, because all his answers can be found there.

I asked him if he has anywhere to stay, to shelter himself from the rain, he said that he was homeless for three days, and that there is no place for him to go other than a communal garage that hasn't been used for some time. He said that he hasn't had a drink for three years, but the culmination of his wife leaving him and taking the kids, him losing his house, and no night centers that can house him temporarily, drove him to alcohol.

Now this man, despite his circumstances, he was proud, he didn't need to beg for help. But I told him, that I wanted to buy for him something and if I gave it to him, it wasn't out of pity, its just something I would have wanted somebody to do for me. So we both went to the gas station. Now as I was choosing what to buy, another customer there who went in to pay for his gas, recognised Darren from his primary school years. I thought that it was more than a coincidence, but there ya go. I bought what I needed and for him, and we said our goodbyes, I tod him that I volunteered at the homeless daycenter, and if he ever wants to talk, or something to eat, I'll be there.

Fact is, our country especially in this economic climate do not care about those who actually need help. Rather all we ever care about is ourselves. It speaks volumes at our characters.

But its a start to talk about it...So it great your asking this Ingrid...

Thanks for your contribution, Noir:) Great story and I hope all stories shared here will inspire those who read it to go out there and do their fair share..being kind doesn't cost much, but it spreads and multiplies and will hopefully one day outweigh the cruelty in this world.

One act of love changes both you and the one touched by it forever.
